Brake warning light staying on, goes out when I press the brakes

Non-ABS 2000 Sport 5spd.

Ok, this problem is a little unusual. A week ago while driving, my brake warning light comes on. I come to a stop, the light goes out. Then a few miles down, it comes back on and has stayed on, aside from when I press the brake down firmly. That is to say, if I press them down 75% of the way, the brake warning light goes out.

I pulled the plug on the proportioning valve and the light goes out, so a problem in the fluid balance? No brake fluid has been lost over the past week and brakes feel the same as they always have. We have driven about 600 miles this past week.

I haven't had a chance to bleed them yet, but I don't know how I would have introduced air into the lines.

I will bleed the brakes this week, but any thoughts as to what else I might check?

Beyond air, it could be a weak/broken spring in the valve causing the issue, or it could be the drums out of adjustment (not very likely cause), or it could be the sensor itself is bad.

check your rear drums immediately. You could be like me and have literally nothing left no springs or pads. My metal shims were not even attached anymore.

As an interesting update to anyone who might experience the same thing. I was double checking the fluid level and noticed that it was actually over the actual "full" mark. In fact, it was all the way full, save for a little bit. It must have come from the dealership like that (just picked this one up a few weeks ago)

So, I removed fluid and returned it to the "full" mark. The next day the light was off to begin with, then slowly came on very dimly.

Today I drove it for about 40 miles and the light hasn't come on since. I will be checking all the brakes tomorrow, but thought I would mention what I had discovered.

Just as an aside, both the front and rear brakes needed changed. Bad dealership, bad! Need to smack them with a rolled up newspaper. Fortunately there was enough left that it hadn't eaten into the rotors or drums.

But no worries, fortunately I can turn a wrench or two. All better now. That fluid reservoir was extremely overfull.
