Broken Front drive shaft, cant engage low range

I have snapped the uni on the front drive shaft of my wrangler, i removed and drove out in 2wd.
2h engages and works fine, 4h engages and obviously only drives the back wheels but 4L wont engage? anyone any notions? does it need the front drive shaft to engage or have i done further damage then the uni alone? got a new uni coming this week just curious before i go installing it.

Also any advice on istalling the uni, is it as simple as replacing the broken part and reinstalling the drive shaft? do i need to line anything up between the front diff and the Drive?

Cheers
Cathal
