Broken pin found on Nv3550 drain plug

New to the forum and first post. Hey Everybody. I recently picked up a 2001 tj with 80k 4.0 -Dana 44 trac loc- 5 speeed anyway as I pulled the drain plug on the tranny I found a broken pin stuck on the magnet, it's a little over an inch long and just under 1/4" in diameter abot 3/16". My first question is What the hell is it? The tranny shifts great with no noise and the fluid I drained was very clear and clean. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Yea, that's not good.. Looks like a needle bearing to me but I'm not sure what the 3550 has. I will check my service manual later and let you know... But I'm sure that someone else will know before I get up.

I'm pretty convinced it's not a needle bearing, it's been sheared off and it's a little dull.

Wow I'm not the only one!

I'm convinced my mystery part is from the input counter shaft bearing, I can help you identify yours when I'm home back on my PC. I found this several years ago when I bought her and she's been driving fine since

I would appreciate it. I googled it and found another person with the same exact problem, same size everything identical. He was on a gun forum and had pictures that were identical. He had a 2000 tj so it's happened before. Yours seems to be larger in diameter and smaller in length. This other person came to the conclusion it was some sort of gear alignment pin used for install that was left in, which others agreed. I'm not buying that.

Post more pictures of where it sheared, I agree, it doesn't look like a needle bearing

update?

Any update to this? We have the exact same broken pin on our drain plug from a 2000 tj.... found it when I drained the fluid when I was putting a clutch in last weekend. Was shifting and driving fine on the way to the shop (other than the throwout bearing going bad)
