Broken rear driveshaft damper

Had a buddy look at her to figure out what's wrong and he said its the driveshaft damper. The rubber has corroded away and left the weight free floating around the driveshaft. Temporarily we have it tied up and suspended as not cause any more damage from it flailing around. What possible actions do I have to fix it? Can I just get a new rubber ring or would I have to replace the whole driveshaft assembly?

No such thing. That rubber boot is just to keep the mud and crap out of the slip yoke. It is supposed to slip freely.

I will take pictures tomorrow but I will try to explain as best I can. Mind you I know just about jack squat about cars.

Driving home after playing in the mud I noticed a very loud clanging noise from under the vehicle. I pulled over and looked underneath at the rear driveshaft and there was a huge metal ring hanging on the driveshaft.

My buddy says that it is a balancer or something that reduces vibration on the driveshaft or something like that. He said that there is suppossed to be a rubber gasket holding the ring on the driveshaft.

Right now we have the ring tied up so its not resting on the driveshaft.

Not all 231's have that balancer. I'd feel fine running without it. You can't put it back together, he would need a new one. I'd pull the driveshaft, take the free part off and put the shaft back on.

Well i cannot post pictures from my phone but the picture above is exactly what im talking about.

I dont feel fine with taking it off if its actually what my buddy says. He builds cars and went to school and now works on semis so i trust his views but he also said he has never had to personally deal with a problen like this.

Im worried that without this counter weight or whatever that the driveshaft will vibrate excessivly and cause more damage than whats already done.

If i have to replace the whole driveshaft, what would that run me for parts? Upgrades?

Also, what are some smart upgrades to do for my girl for doing some rough mudding?

Also, what would have caused this to break? Is this my fault from running her too hard or does it take time for something like this to happen?

You can get a stock driveshaft for 50 bucks. Or aftermarket are 2-300? Depends what company. I would take it off for now. It will cause more vibration left on.

Mine doesn't have a weight it has a metal pipe clamp type fastener holding the end on.

Your over thinking this. Take the damn thing off, it's doing more harm than good. If you have vibes have the DS balanced. The harmonic balancers never came on the older TJs, which are exactly the same and mine is just fine.
