Budget Boost or What?

okay so i've basically read every thread in the library regarding a budget boost. this spring i need new tires, i planned on goin bigger to 31x10.5x15 BFG's, but i would like to beef up the jeep a little too. everything is stock right now and i've heard that the budget lift is an easy way to go. However, i've been trying to lay out the pros and cons of it. Finally once i decided to go with the budget boost i read that just getting lifted springs makes a much better ride? i'm no expert at this so i need advice, i want to try to keep the costs down (plan on trying to get a used pair of 31's first) so if i could get some recommendations it would be sweet.

I just put the BB lift on my 05 and it rides like stock. I didn't put different shocks on yet, but I am sure it may have a different ride to it. And by the looks of it I am sure you can accomidate 31's. By the way I was all stack till the BB lift. Shocks to come. Here are 2 pics. 1st is after 2nd is before.

i have a 2" spacer lift from rocky road outfitters and it works great. my husband had a tj and put 2" skyjacker lift springs in to. he was able to run 32's w/o any rubbing. if you just want to tun 31's than the space lift should do you just fine. either option is good and relatively inexpensive. my only other advise is to stay away from a body lift.

Nothing wrong w/ the spacers. I used them in my first 2 Jeeps. They serve their purpose well. BB rides stock, and expensive spring kit can ride better, but most will ride stiffer.

Why is that, unless you are talking a 2" or 3" BL? I plan to add the JKS 1.25" BL/MML in May to my 2" SL in order to run 33s eventually. Lots of people do that without problems, yes?

my apologies. i was not clear in my post. i meant a 2"-3" BL in place of a spacer lift. i have no qualms about a 1"-1.75" being used in conjunction with a suspension lift., it when people use them in place of an actual suspension lift.

these looks like a pretty good deal, did you go with the new shocks that rocky road offers too? They're argument against OME, Skyjacker, and some of the others sounds legit, (they're made for bigger trucks with more weight and make a stiffer ride) but i dont know if its true.

when i got the kit i just used the shock mount extenders (i was younger and stupider). then i broke one of the stock shocks and decided to replace them w/ skyjacker hydros. imo, the skyjacker ones are good. i've had them for 3 years and they continue to serve me well. the OME are some of the best shocks out there and i plan on getting them as soom as my skyjackers wear out. as for the rocky road shocks, these were not offered when i got my lift so i don't know much about them. if i were to buy the kit today, i would buy the kit including the shocks.

No problem. That's what I thought you meant. I'm a little nervous even installing the 1.25 cuz of the potential for t-case linkage and tranny shifter issues - but I guess those are fairly easily resolved if encountered at all. We'll see - the BL is mandatory for other mods i want to do so I really have no choice.

ya i'm looking at either the 2" ($235) or 3" ($295) kit from rocky road right now with the shocks, they both look solid and a good price. i think the 3" kit would add more value to the jeep(2"BB and 1"BL w/o interferring with modifications) but i'm gonna have to wait a couple days and be sure i can afford the move.

On my 2000 Sport, I used a Skyjacker 2". only problem I had was getting the bushings in the shocks

the 2" bb and 1" bl should work ok for you. 1" of bl is usually not enough to cause linkage problems. there are some places that offer a 3" spacer lift where the spacer itself is 3". if you see those, i would strongly discourage you from using it. if you are going to go that tall, go with a regular suspension lift. once you start going over 2"-2.5" in suspension lift you start running into driveline angle problems.

well i think i'm gonna go with the 2" kit, i just made up some cash on the market today and decided that i should reward myself. haha. plus with the 2" kit i'll have a little more money too fool around with when searching for tires.

it's been three months now, and no complete lift... i have acquired a set of 2" spacers for the BB, but now that I'm realizing the process of installing them, i think it would be in my best interest to replace my 12 year old shox now. I'm still favoring the rockyroad shox cuz Jeep Wrangler, CJ, Unlimited, and Rubicon shocks i haven't found anything out there that you'll most likely get your moneys worth when your riding just a 2" BB besides OME. But there's no need to look to replace springs and stuff right? And would buying a longer shock do anything? maybe work out later in the future with Q Discos? Still learning.....

Yeah, when you put the 2" spacers in it will give you more up travel, but less droop. Having the appropriate length shocks will give you the best of both worlds. However changing shocks is easy stuff so I wouldn't let that deter you from putting your spacers in.

so are there 2" shox that I could get that would offset the new spacers? or would buying something a little bit longer better worth more just in case i want to do a 1" BL sometime later?

Only with the proper backspacing and they will rub if you disconnect and wheel. There is no room for real flex with 31's without lifting.

No i know, I have 31x11.5's on right now with no issues at all. I want the economically sound lift right now(BBfor $40), but what im thinkin about is in the future, if in case i do want to something like a 1" BL to go along with the BB is it best to just buy shx that would still work with everything. I'm trying to figure that stuff out cuz im not familiar with it.

i picked up a full 2" BB from a guy back home. however. its only the spacers and nothing else... i'm also probably going to order skyjacker hydros that are extended 3" and do the whole installation at one time....in write ups i've seen other parts. i.e. bumpstop, and bolts that go with the BB..... what should i be prepared to purchase to make this installation easy and what sizes?

Finally Done!

Got the spacers in with new skyjacker hydros and also threw on the center caps! Looks a lot better and rides awesome!

is it this that your guys are talking about Inexpensive Rocky Road budget lifts for your Jeep TJ Wrangler I want to have a small lift too but keeping the gearing stock. I put on 31"tire already . is this the best bet ?

This is my 97' TJ with 30x9.5 BFG A/T's with factory isolators and 1" BB front and rear,


This is with 31x10.5 Maxis Buckshot Mudders with factory isolators front and rear and 2" BB on front and 1" BB on rear to get the TJ to sit level,


Put the winch on and it sagged in the front again so I did some more changing the setup. This is with the winch, 31x10.5 Buckshot Mudders, Factory isolator removed with 3" BB on front (approx. 2.5 from stock wit isolator) and factory isolator and 1" BB on rear to get it sitting level again,

Shocks have been upgraded with Rancho's.
Hope this gives some idea on amount of spacers needed.

yes that is the kit. I had intentions of doing that kit, but i just found a good set of used spacers for $40 and then spent $120 on ebay for the skyjaker hydros. so a much more cost effect solution to get the exact same result. the hydros work awesome! probably wouldnt tell much difference b/w them and the rocky road ones.

I wouldn't recommend a budget boost. I regretfully have had mine on for 4 years. The problems are the cheap shocks and the death wobble. Driving on cheap shocks is like not having any shocks at all; you feel every crack in the road.

woods453 Sounds like you got shock problems rather than bb problems. I have a 98 se and all i did was toss in the spacers, left the shocks alone, and slapped on some superswampers and got Muddy. I know every jeep is diffrent but i had no change in drivability with the 2 in bb. I even ran superwampers with no probs.

every jeep is definitely different and i don't think i'd call the skyjackers cheap either. compared to the more expensive nitro's, they're known to ride a heck of a lot better. just perhabs some unfortunate luck that fell on your side woods453

I just received my package !!!! but the jeep is still at the mechanic, so as soon as I get it back, I'll install it. now , they could have include some pics with the instructions....
