Budget time!

Ok, what is the cheapest engine swap(Keep stock axles, transfer case etc.) that will get me enough more power than my 2.5L to justify the cost?

4.0L would be your best bet.

Would my current tranny work, or do I need to get the tranny with it?

you need a tranny. I would supercharge it.. cost almost the same as a 4.0.. plus it way cool.

It would be wise to get a motor and tranny together(auto or manual your choice)... would probably still be cheaper this way as well.

Wasn't there a post on here recently by somebody running a 2.4 turbo fm a PT Cruiser? It seems to me that might not cost a whole bunch more, and you'd get the added benefit of maintaining some level of fuel economy..

How much power would I gain? And what would happen to gas mileage?

gas mileage may stay the same depending on how much skinny pedal you need to maintain cruising speed with ur 33's right now, ihave stock 3.73 gears and the 4.0 with 35 in tires and i get about 14.5 mpg consitently now with half and half city/highway
id expect u would get about 16

Ya, whatever I do it will increase my mileage then. I only get 12mpg with a 2.5L on 33's. Thats part of the reason for the upgrade.

Never mind, they are way more than swapping a 4L in. So, how much will it cost me to get a good condition 4L, wiring harness, ecu, A/C, Tranny, and whatever else I need? Also, do i need a new radiator?

A super charger will kill the milage as it is always providing atleast some boost. A turbo would be a batter option. Because while just driving around and cruising it will have little effect and when you get on it it will spool up and give you the boost you want. This also depends on the size of the turbo when it spools up. If you ran 8-10 psi of boost it would really wake that babby up. Then put in a nice cam and port job to go along with that. You would need to run premium. You may be able to run mig grade if you hade the pistons dished to like 20cc's that may lower the compression to where midgrade would run with no pinging.

nice, but is it a manual and are you on freeway? I drive 95% of the time in traffic and going up and down hills. This weekend I'm going to do a tune-up, new cap, wires and plugs and then reset my computer and let it re-learn itself. I have never reset it, and I think the plugs are originals. Maybe that will help alot.
