build up options

ok lads i need some help.

first the details.

97 TJ, 4.0L
front D30, rear D44
5 speed manual

planned 4.56 gears with ARB's front and back

i'm happy to stay with 33's for the road, but need some serious bush tires

would i get much more benifit from 35's offroad than 33's?

my off road tire options are 33" swampers ( this sounds more friendly to the little D30.)
or 35 simex jungle trekker 2s (dont think you see these in america, but trust me they are good)

so my question is. will the stock D30 with a locker handle the 35's or will i constantly be blowing u joints or ring and pinnions?

will the 35's even be that much more capable?

should i do anything to the D30, or just carry spare axles and unis?

The 30 can run 35's but you need to keep in mind that's really about its upper level. Lot so folks run after market shafts and joints to help add to its life. The ARB will of course help vs. a full time locker, which will constantly place stress on. Things most likely to bust would be the u-joint, then when that go's it take out the axle yokes. Good news is it only takes abot 30 mins to change this all out. Now if it decides to take out your ball joints... that's a bit harder to change out on the trail.

33vs 35. I have run both I like the 35's for the little bit of added stance once you air down. But again they put stress on stuff like ball joints, rod ends, steering etc etc...

I agree you will want to check into a Super 30 kit and get 30-spline axles and beef it up. I run 33 BFG MT and love they get me through everything I put them through and get me back since I have know winch.

The Super 30 will give you the same U-joint as the D-44, that's the week point in both those axles. I don't believe the spline count is critical, but a factor.

The Ring and Pinion is the week link.

go read Scouts "Lets Talk Axles" thread - lots of good talk in there, although he has a Rubi D44(same outters as a D30) but you'd be looking into the same stuff as him almost.
