Bumper mounted tire carriers

I started this with a search, but haven't seen anybody mention one way or the other.

I would like to get a bumper mounted tire carrier, but from just about every picture I've seen, it looks like the hinge interferes with the lower hinge on the tail gate. My concern is that I won't be able to open the gate to at least 90 degrees. My plan is to build a storage box with a drawer mechanism, but will need the tailgate out of the way for that to work.

Any opinions one way or the other? If it does interfere, I'll probably go with something like an OR-Fab carrier instead.

Thanks for your help.

Build a carrier with the pivot directly under the taillight... I mean... since you are building a box... might as well build that too and save some loot!

There are kits you can buy that come with the pivot bearings etc... ( I made mine from SS and used Timken bearings and races)

OBM built mine (it's based on a Rock Hard design) and I have no trouble whatsoever with interference.

Here it is open part way, but it swings out well past the 90 degree mark.

I made a nice bumper tire carrier but got tired of the rattles, the heavy weight and opening the latch to get to the tailgate. I sold it and went with a Bestop tube mounted tire carrier. It's far more sturdy.

My Dirtworx doesn't interfere, I can open the tailgate wide open.
Shoot an email to Robert at Dirtworx with what you're looking for, he may have some ideas to help you out.

Here's a pic of mine without the swingout, you can see the pivot point mounted outside the tailgate hinge path:

I don't seem to have any pics of it all opened up.
(Be advised, Dirtworx bumpers are shipped bare steel, painting them is up to you)

I just went out & took a couple of pics with it all open. The swing-out is fully open, the tailgate is opened to the point of almost touching the swing-out, but not quite.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'll definitely look into those options. My Jeep is the metallic silver, so whatever I get I will be painting rustoleum metallic cobalt as well as the front bumper and rocker guards.

Time for bed for me.

Oh, I just pulled the carpet out and mopped up the remnants of last night's t-storm. Don't think that stuff will make it back inside.

Thanks again.

My Warn rear tire bumper with tire carrier allows the gate to open to its maximum. The gate stops itself, not the carrier.
