Bumper style or hidden hitch!!!

Hello everyone,

New to the forum. Just want to say Hi to all. looks like a great place.
BTW. 2000 TJ sport 4.0 very stock.

So in a few months I'm going on a trip and will be taking the jeep along. However, I will need some extra space. I'm going to get a rack that mounts to the trailer hitch and throw a cargo net or two over it.
I'm not sure if I should get a hitch incorporated into my bumper or the hidden hitch u haul style...
I realize that the bumper style would handling less tongue weight. But i may want to pull a mall something in the future.

What do ya think? Thanks for your input!!!

very low, I don't wheel much but mine hangs all the time even with a 4" suspension lift. I am looking for a bumper sytle rated hitch, becareful, many of the rear bumpers with hitchs built in are not rated for towing they will say something like " for accesories only"

here is a decent one I found that is rated

Jeep® Rear Bumpers - Olympic 4x4 Products - 553-121 - Gloss Black Rock Rear Bumper with 2” Receiver Hitch for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited and other Jeep Wrangler Parts, Jeep Accessories and Soft Tops by FORTEC

just depends on what you want

i have a hitch built in the bumper that says its not rated... It bolts to the frame in four places just like the hitch i had. I hauled my dirtbike on one of those hitch haulers (250lbs right on the bumper) and didnt have any problems. I think the company just doesnt spend the money to get it rated

I have been looking for a tow rated bumper for some time. Most companies don't spend the money like stated by KawiTJ. The biggest fault with the bumpers is trying to find a bumper with the safety chain brackets attached. Usually the bumper will only have a 2" reciever and state that the bumper is "accessory friendly". I have a Smittybilt bumper and the Smittybilt cargo basket. I no longer use the basket as it has actually bent the receiver hitch down about a 1/2". Not so bad when not using the basket, but when attached it has a pretty drastic angle on it. I would recommend the Hidden Hitch product if you plan on frequent use.

Most of the bumper hitches can handle accessory stuff....Bike racks, hitch platforms, mostly stuff that weighs no more then 500 lbs. The frame mounted hitch is a rated hitch and can tow more then most jeeps are rated to tow.
