bumper / winch plate

i got a quote from a local guy who welds and has a 4x4 mech shop.
400 bucks for a Painted box tube bumper (with clevis hooks) and a winch mounting plate, is this overpriced?

I think mine was closer to $375 for a very similar design but that also included a stinger. I'd probably go for it if his quality looks good and if he would do it for $375.

Personnally, I think it is a little on the high side. You could purchase a Warn for $250 (Warn 61853 - Warn Rock Crawler Front Bumper for 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec) or have one built cheaper, like mine which can be seen here for $200 (granted, a friend built it and gave me a good price, but $400 still seems high: http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/rubi...lts-20686.html).

Just my thoughts....

One thing about the Warn bumper you provided a link to, it doesn't include a mounting plate which will add a substantial amount to that price. The bumper the OP is asking about includes a built-in winch mounting plate as I had mine made with. And having seen Warn's bumper many times, even though I am a big Warn winch fan, it doesn't impress me at all.

Noted. I missed the winch plate portion. Concur, this will add a substantial cost to the bumper. Mine did not have a winch plate either, so perhaps $350-$400 is not too bad after all.

I think the winch plate is about $100 or you can just build one out of some plate steel, drill the 8 holes, primer, paint and go. I bought 2 of the warns for my two TJ's, the first one cost me $200 the second $210, I bought them locally from a 4x4 shop who is a warn dealer, saved $20-$30 on shipping as the local big parts warehouse carried them in stock. Heavy items I try to find locally just to save on shipping.

could always go the "fab-it-yourself" route.

$50 in materials, a little grinding, drilling, and welding and you've saved yourself $300-$400 bux.

This is about 3 1/2 feet of 2"x4"x1/4" square tubing for the bumper and a 3/8" (if I remember right) plate for the winch plate. Cut, drill, weld, grind and there ya have it. (of course you'll have to add the rust later when you smash into boulders and forget to repaint it )
