Buy an 05 LJ, or keep my 99 TJ SE?

Just paid off my used 99 TJ SE 4 banger, steel wheels, manual trans. My 99 has treated me very good in the 2 1/2 years I've owned it (aside from being slow on the freeway).

my Bro-in-Law that works at a nearby dealership can hook me up with an 05 LJ unlimited (51K miles, Auto Trans (makes the wife happy), in-line 6, aluminum wheels, and painted to match fender flares) for 9K with the trade in of my 99.

Should I assume another 3+ year payment and get something newer/better, or just spend the money on making my 99 4 banger SE better?

Personally I would keep the 99. It is your Jeep free and clear. Being slow on the freeway is just part of owning a Jeep. You can get aluminium rims fairly cheap on this forum or craigslist/ebay. I would always prefer owning a vehicle outright rather than making payments. That way, the monthly payment can go into upgrades for your Jeep. This is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. Let us know how you choose to go though.

Jeff

Turd makes a good point (but most turd's do, at least on one end), <sorry for the stupid joke Jeff>.

But, if you can swing the payments, I'd do it. Get into the TJ. The I6 will treat you much better on the freeway and on the trail. And a happy wife equals a happy husband!

I would keep it, I would use the money to switch over to a 4.0L wouldn't be so bad on the freeway....

Yeah, been thinking. Might just stay with mine. It's paid off, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"....but you're always left thinking that the grass is greener on the other side.

Keep that 99... it's the last real Jeep left. The new JK's are nowhere near authentic, and having a real Jeep will make you cooler.

It is not to say that the LJ doesn't have it's authenticity (I mean c'mon, it's a throwback to the scrambler) but at least it's not a JK.

real jeep? why is a tj any more of a real jeep than a jk? it says jeep on it, does it not? using your logic, the farther away from the original Willys M38 we get then the less "authentic" it is. those jeeps are as authentic as they come, and to my knowledge they were far from what your tj is. as far as i know the original jeeps didn't have power steering and brakes, airbags, and a nice cushy coil suspension, i could go on, but i think you get the picture. so does this mean that my cj7 is more of a jeep than your tj?

if you have the money up front then keep your jeep and upgrade the engine to the 6.0. if not, but you can afford the payments then upgrade to the LJ.

that was a rhetorical question. i don't feel that my tj is any less of jeep than my cj. and i don't understand why you do.

keep the tj...

i agree with jiffy. the JK is less of a jeep than a tj. when you start adding air conditioning, power windows and power locks you are no longer driving a Jeep. you are now in a minivan/cross over suv in an awkard looking jeep shell.

I guess it all depends which Jeep you would be happier with.

Your '99 TJ is paid off, which is always a great big plus. On the other hand, if you would prefer the automatic transmission, inline 6 and bigger size of the LJ, you might be very happy with that as well. I think it's an individual decision.

Have you test-driven the LJ to see how you feel about it?

The LJ is very, very nice, almost mint. (not that my 99 isn't).

My 99 was previously owned by a couple of snow birds from Missouri they would tow it behind their RV. So the interior and everything is in top shape.

I had talked to my brother-in-law yesterday ready to move on with the deal, but layoffs at work today, kinda got me thinking. I dodged a bullet again for the fourth time in a row. I'm thinking maybe I should hold on to mine since it's paid off, instead of risking a repo if I happen to get laid off further down the line.

Keep the tj and just save the cashola! Motor swap is not that bad along with just upgrading yours. I am not a fan of the LJ or JK's. I have a 97 4 banger and yea it is not fast but I don't mind going slow. I have a mustang that will out run just about anything out there! Please the tj is a looker and a crawler not the mall hopper!

^ agree. Let things settle at work and enjoy your 99. Sounds like it's mint, which makes it even cooler to own. Been caught in a downsizing myself (you can only duck and weave so long). I was very glad I had nothing but a mortgage at the time.

Keep the 99 and utilize the money into upgrades. I have a payment on my jeep, if I did not my jeep would not still be stock.

I have the LJ and just a couple of guestions for you. Does this LJ come with the soft top, hard top or both? Does it have all the gadgets and gizmos you want? step rails, rocker panel protection, etc? If not, you will find that the after market parts that pertain to it's increased size are not as readily available and also a little (sometimes a Lot) more costly. Just keep these things in mind and be sure it is exactly what you want, the way you want it. Personally, I'd keep the 99

I dunno, I understand the debate. I'd love to have an LJ, but man, it's tough to fork over that much cash. If you can afford it comfortably and your job is stable, I'd do go for it.

... then again, if you're seriously debating it, then maybe you should save your money until you know for sure what you want.

I would really love to have an LJ. But I don't like having a car payment, so I'm fine with my older TJ. The LJ would be sweet, but not worth a payment in my opinion. Plus, if your TJ works fine, you could be trading into someone elses problem.

I'll keep it,if it's paid for, you can always put half of what your payment would be on the side and upgrade it the way you want and still save money (not even talking about insurance premium beeing higher).
if you want to go fast, get a bike for your craving, I do !!
