Buying a Jeep tomorrow

I've been looking for a TJ for quite some time now. 2 Years or so. I finally found one that suits me. It's a 2006 SE with 90k miles.Went to check it out a few days ago and the interior and exterior looked flawless besides some scratches on the rims. The dealer was changing the tires since they were bald when I arrived so I was unable to test drive it. I believe there was an oil leak they were fixing as well.

Tomorrow I should be heading back there and taking it for a spin. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on what to look for while I'm test driving or maybe something I forgot to check when I did my visual inspection. I'm going to see if I can't take it to a mechanic to get a second opinion.

What I'm concerned about is. There is no center console. I believe it's due to it being the SE and It's completely stock everything. I have heard things about back splash/overflowing when filling up the gas.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

nice SE. you are correct, the center console was an option on the SE, this particular one appears to have not been built with that option. As for the gasoline over-flowing out the fill tube, if that does occur then you likely have a plugged vent tube and that is easy to repair just do a search on this forum.

The last year of the SE also could be ordered with the 4.0L engine, does yours have the 4.0L?

I believe this is the 4.0L version though I'm not 100% and it's not listed on the website.

if its the 2.4 4cyl I would NOT buy it.........those dodge neon engines are junk

97-02 wranglers have the 2.5 AMC derived Iron Duke, it is a good motor however still not as good as the 4.0

that would be the #1 question to ask the sell, as was said, there is a big difference between a 2.4L SE and a 4.0L SE.

Agreed on the engine clarification sentiments expressed above. It would have been a deal breaker for me. Hope it works out for you; I know the feeling of looking for a long time for the right TJ!

From what I've read on here the biggest problem with the 2.4 is that the jeep had it's own version of the engine so if yours breaks a replacement is almost impossible to find and is very expensive if you do find one. I would expect a big discount in price just to offset a potential $3 or $4k overhaul in the future.

Gasoline flowing out the fill tube is common on '05/06 TJs. Problem is caused by ethanol swelling some components in the fuel tank. Easy fix is to install a GM flapper valve in the factory fill hose.

Lots of reading and results here, including my experience:

Good luck with your purchase!

Don't all of the 4.0Ls say so on the side? That one dies not.

I'm with the others guys on the 2.5. The options, additions, and mods for jeeps are endless and things like consoles are easily replaced or found used. One thing you can't add is power. Believe me, In the process of regearing my 3:07 4.0 right now. I didn't even know about gears when I bought until I hit a hill on the interstate and I was only running 31's. Been driving v8's all my life.
I'm not hating on the 4c, and it may fit your needs fine, just in my search I was able to find 4.0s in or around the same price range. Good luck and hope it works out.

Looks like it is a 4c. Guess i'll probably keep looking around. If I'm going to spend my money may as well do it right. Thanks for the advice everyone. Will keep updated on the status of my Jeep hunt.

What's your budget? How much were you going to spend on the SE? Maybe expand your search dependinig on where you are located. Finding the right TJ/LJ is an adventure. Had to travel 850 miles for ours. Good luck.

I want to spend under 20 but closer to the 15k mark. I talked the SE down to 12,350 before i found out it was a 4c. Traveling is a bit harder for me, but may have to go that route. I'm located in Washington state currently

Travelling isn't as hard as it seems. Get Autocheck or Carfax and run vin#'s and talk to the owners. You'll get a sense who the person is while talking to them and you'll know about the jeep through picks and descriptions. Whittle the possibles down to a couple and use your gut feeling on which one. It's a lot of fun while your still looking. Use Autotrader and Cargurus, I feel CL is not a good way to go for a whole jeep. I know they're are those who would disagree but that's my suggestion. We bought our 05 LJ for 11K even. It had 112K on the clock. Took a train down to Western Pa and it was all and more than we hoped. Drove it home the same day. Those who sell TJ's are used to people driving, flying, etc to get theirs. It's more the norm than you think. Use this forum for any questions or help. good luck

Jeep stopped putting "4.0 L" decals on the side of the Wrangler on model year 2002, so anything 2002 or newer would not have the engine call out decal.

Thanks for the clarification! I like my 4.0L on the '98. It kind of reminds me I am only 1L short of being able to be "Rollin' in my 5.0".

Just count the spark plugs if it's that hard to find out.

That would require taking the shoes off.....if there's spark plugs on both sides...4 banger...only on one side......straight six.

With that kind of budget....put your periscope on LJ Rubicons. You should be able to come up with one around 15-16K. You're not in the dreaded salt zone. I understand you're a squid....so travelling across land is difficult, but you're near the ocean. Just have the Capt make a quick detour.....California is the place you want to go. No...that's the Clampetts. Former squid here, good luck on your search. With that strong budget bring your aim up a little higher. No SE or X....Sport at the least...Rubicon or Sahara. The ultimate...06 LJ Rubihara...last year the TJ was made and only a 1K of them....specifically numbered. LJ's were only made in 04-06 and there is a lot of discussion about them....better than a TJ....well more room that's for sure. We just went down to Cape Cod for 5 days and took the LJ. Fishing poles, metal detectors, clothes, and other essentials and everything fit without anything outside of the jeep. Try that with a TJ and a family of 4. Lastly....thanks for your service.

Great advice, if u have the budget aim higher. Could end up with a really low mileage TJ / LJ you'll have for a long while. Rubihara's were 2005 model year. Been a few popping up lately in the Atlanta area.

Found a Black 2006 Unlimited with just over 65k miles. Listed for 16k looks like it's been on the market for quite some time. Carfax says it's good but was in 1 accident. Doesn't look like their is any visual damage. Hopefully going to take a look at it tomorrow.

I've been reading a lot on the OPDA issue. Should I be concerned? What should i look for at the dealership, or how could I get a guaranteed replacement if it started to fail?

Concerned, no, but awareness isn't bad. Looks to be fairly easy to pull and inspect. Worst case proactively replace it with the crown part that costs $120 and keep on trucking.

Now your aim is high...way to go. Sweet LJ in your crosshairs. Looks like it's been babied and well taken care of. They're asking 16K but that's what there're asking....not necessarily what you're paying. Any more news on this find?? Is this a manual? No concern over the OPDA....IF you have an issue...and I mean IF....the fix is pretty straightforward. I have the same Jeep in 05, bought ours with 112K and no issues whatever. Love it. Check the avatar out.....the missus with Jenny.

Now I just looked closer....it has the matching paint fender flares...cruise? Does the Carfax say Unlimited Sport? Looks like this has some extras options in it. Has the discs all around and the D44 for sure but someone might have originally ordered it up special with all the toys. I was just wondering.
Good write up....http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...03/209374.html

Funny how it actually works the other way every once and a while....I believe it was the poster above 12VTman that bought his rig with no decals and then found out it was a Saharicon #380......sweet.
