Buying a new softtop for my 99 Wrangler Sport...suggestions?

Evening all! So I am getting rid of my hard top and going to a soft top. Currently I have 1/2 doors with slider uppers but think I might switch to full doors. Being a new Jeep owner I wanted to see what top you all suggest for my Jeep. I have an aggressive Jeep with nice times, rims, speakers, etc so I want a top to match the other upgrades. Thanks!

Bestop. I'm about to wrap up a second season with mine and it's just like new. All the zippers are heavy duty and all mine hook up with ease and never get stuck. After taking it off and on a time or two it goes back on like a glove. The material is thick and fairly quiet. I've scratched through some wooly overgrown trails and there is no damage from branches and what not( knock on wood). I use my hard top during the cool season and I store my Bestop indoors.

Definitely Bestop all the way. I installed their Replace-a-Top on my '97 SE last year, and I just installed another one on my '98 Sport over the weekend. Since Bestop was the OE supplier to Jeep, this is the only way to get factory quality and fitment.

In your case, you won't have the OEM softtop hardware. This gives you two options. #1 is to buy their Supertop kit which gives you all the hardware needed to install the top. This will work, but the bow system is a bit different than the OEM style. If that bothers you, option #2 would be to get a set of factory hardware (perhaps from a wrecking yard) and then cover it all in a new Replace-A-Top like I did.

Either way you'll end up with a fantastic soft top.

From a lot of posts on various forums, the Supertop frame is not well liked. It is not as user friendly as the OEM frame.

Your had top can be sold for 600-1000.

As far as what you want, how do you want to use it? If you want to put it all the way down, the OEM is the only wat to go. In that case look for a used top. Any 97-06 will fit. Used frames and fabric with all/most of the hardware will be 200-400 +/-. Tinted windows and sailcloth may be at the upper end. Keep watching ebay, craigslist and the for sale sections of the various Jeep forums. If you can't get a complete top, used frames are around 100 then you can but the replace a top fabric..

If you do not want to fully put down the top, look at the frameless tops. The have the agressive fastback look.

- The best is Rampage (ex Viking). The windows fold into the top and convert into a safari top.

- Softtopper is new and so far people like it. It converts like the above

- Besttop Trektop. The down side is the side windows do not zip out.

You guys are all awesome, thank you. You make being a Jeep Rookie alot easier, ha. I am assuming I dont have the hardware for the soft top as my Jeep just came with a hard top and a mesh top that just covers the front and back seats. On my roll cage/sound bar I do have two little "posts" on each side that the guy said were for installing a soft top. Thats not the hardware that youre referring too, right?

As for what I want the soft top for, I want the convienence of having a top if a storm hits on the way to the lake, etc. I plan on having it off/down as much as possible. I like the sound of the Rampage Viking...so your saying its a normal soft top that you can remove all of the windows? Thats pretty sweet!

One last thing, I have upper sliders now which I dont really like. Eventually Id like to have a set of full doors as well. Until then, if I buy a set up cheap uppers with zipper windows, will that tie right in to the new soft top? I guess Im asking if the upper zipper doors that Ill buy from Quadratec/eBay/etc, will they be equipped to fit right in with my softtop?

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP, THIS IS GREAT! HOPEFULLY SOMEDAY ILL BE ABLE TO SHED SOME LIGHT ON NEW JEEP OWNERS AS WELL.

Yes, zipper uppers will work fine with any soft top. Keep in mind they aren't cheap tho' If you want to go completely topless, often, with the ability to put the top up in a hurry, then a frameless top might not be your best choice. They are bulky to carry with you, and take a few minutes to install. As I believe was mentioned, if you can get your hands on some factory bows, then the R-a-T will be a very good choice. Easiest up/ down abilities and the best fit.

LOL, Im sorry, but what is a R-a-T top, ha. So, to totally dummy this down, you all would suggest I buy a soft top that isnt frameless. I should buy a factory set up bows (that the same as a frame right?) and a RAT soft top?

My apologies but this is new lingo to me. Thanks again!

Bestop Replace A Top (available in std. fabric or sailcloth. you want sailcloth). It's new fabric for the OEM frame.

Yes the factory top is what you want if you want toppless. Frame = Bows RAT = fabric

Where are you located? If you are in a cold/winter climate, you may want to keep the hard top. Many of us have both and switch them.

Watch this video and you will understand the OEM top

I'd wait until after SEMA. there's going to be at least one new alternative...

If you don't have the OEM frames then I'd look at the Rampage/viking frameless top (in the heavier fabric). or wait until after SEMA. (its my favorite top, but I'm hoping the one coming out shortly will be even better.)

If you already have an OEM softop and like how it functions, and don't desire anything different, then the Bestop sailclotch replace-a-top is the best option.

If you have any doubts, wait until after SEMA.
