Buying a used 99 Sport

Gentlemen:

I am planning to buy a 99 Wrangler sport, 4 cyl, manual, AC, 80k miles. Carfax checks OK, no accidents, appears to be in good-excellent shape.

This would be my first Jeep.

Owner wants 6500, but I want Cindy Crawford to call me Big Daddy Spankbottom; it doesn't mean it will happen.

Anyhow, what are some things I should look for in particular and how can I do an easy check of these things? I know it has had some front end work, ball joints, tie rod, stabilizer, in the past two years. I plan on taking it to an independent shop and getting it diagnosed: AC check, error code analysis, front end, perhaps compression?

Vehicle is not lifted, nor has it been in my understanding.

Thanks in advance,

Mingy

First off, I am pretty sure you have a contradiction there as 'Sports' have the 4.0L 6 cylinder. The 4 cylinders rarely came with AC. I have owned a 6cyl wrangler and now have a 4 cyl....I regret not having the larger motor.

The miles sounds great and the fact that it hasn't been lifted would tell me that it probably hasn't been dogged out.

The biggest thing I would look for, especially if you can put it up on a rack, is rust. Mine has a lot of rust issues that I inherited from previous owner and I wish I had put it on a rack rather than just crawling up under it at time of purchase.

Good luck!!

Maybe you meant SE as the SE has the 4 cyl. And hey, mine is a 4 and it came with AC.
Check Kelly Blue Book kbb.com as the 99 SE books out around $5000, thats what I paid for mine....no rust all stock.

I have never heard someone say they wish they had less power in their Jeep. Go for the inline 6 or you will regret it. They actually get about the same mileage or so I am told.

Hate to pop your bubble lou but I like my 4 bangger! I have a 2.5 w/air and it's great. I go 95% of the places that everyone else in the club can go and Mine don't have to be trailered home crippled. It simply don't have the power to break itself. lol I just armored the heck out if it and bounce it of anything in the way. When I add the winch I'll be able to go everywhere the rest of the pack goes.

I have now heard of someone who would rather have a 4 banger rather than a inline 6. Guess there is a first for everything.

Agree with pakman... Had a 4... Great, unless I had to enter traffic flow from a dead stop. That was more of a "thrill" than any trail riding!

Price will vary depending on location but I would not pay that much for a 4 banger. If you can get a 6, even it it has higher miles go for it. You will read threads each week, or day, about people wanting to get more power out of the 4 banger. Also with the 6cly you can find the dana 44 rear axle , which was never offered int he 4cly tj. It is a far better axle. the 4 banger also has the weaker ax-5 5 spd.

Thanks

Gentlemen:

Thanks for the reply. Rust checking will be my first priority.

And "Sport" was a brain fart. I was thinking "SE" meant sport edition.

I have a 97 F 250 with a 7.3 Power Stroke diesel. When I need power that is the vehicle, it has an Edge chip with three positions: stock, +25HP and 50lb Torque, and Crap your Pants.....

This is a second vehicle for me to allow me to rest the F-250 more in the summer. Also, since I do not know where the economy is going, I feel like it will be good to get an extra vehicle, just in case. Am not planning any beach runs; if I do then perhaps 1-2 per year. Will pull nothing more than a jetski with it. Don't even need the 4WD, but I insist on it.

Will double check the Kelly BB; pulled up some different numbers yesterday.

And thank you for your replies.
