Buying used Dana 44 rear axle?

Anyone know where I can get a used d44 rear axle for my 04 tj? Made the mistake of buying it with a d35 year and I dont want it to be damaged on the trails.

How much would a used one cost around? Thanks for the help

Would the ford 8.8 be better? I wouldn't know how to make my own. Not there yet haha

I've got 33/12.5/15 with 3.73s I play in the mud though, you may want to talk with some of the rock guys to get their opinion for the best rock set-up

I mud too occasionally when I feel like changing my diff fluid haha I won't rock crawl just wanna be safe rather than sorry

Your D30 isn't any stronger than your D35....it just doesn't see the stresses that your rear sees. As for "will my front hold up?", it all depends on what your plan entails. What size tire are you planning to run? What gear ratio? These are questions that need answered before we can say whether or not your front D30 will hold up. The deepest gear ratio you can go with a D30 is 4.88, so if you're wanting deeper gears, you'll need to upgrade to another front diff. If you're only wanting to run 33" tires and you don't plan on beating your Jeep to death in the rocks, then your D30 will be ok......especially if you upgrade your stock axles with those made by Superior.

Give us some details on how you want to build your Jeep and we can give better advice.

I got lucky and guy sold me his tj matching 3.73 d44 less shafts $200.

Anyone had problems with the 8.8 driveshaft "pig" angles being off a couple inches as a DD?

As of right now I have 33s with a 4 inch suspension. I definitely don't plan on rock crawling or anything extreme. In a couple of years I may move up to 35s also getting a 6 inch long arm because that's my dream lift but that will be in a while.

If you center the axle properly you shouldn't have any vibrations; I had some light vibes but the axle was a bit to the passenger side. After I set it properly everything was fine. With the differential already offset there isn't much room for error, although having 4" of suspension lift and a TT probably added to the problem.

Help. I have a 2002 Wrangler TJ that I bought that I thought had everything. 4 link Rough Country 6 inch long arm suspension, 3 inch body lift, smittybilt armor all the way around, all the underhood goodies and tuning you could ask for, custom seats, custom interior, bilstien nitro filled shocks with coil overs, front and rear spider diff protection cages, and sitting on a beautiful set of toyo 37'' open country mts, with black and chrome rims. It was a great price, so after driving it a few times, I bought it. Now, I don't do any really hard wheeling, but if there is muddy trail going back to a fishing spot I will off road to get there. So I've done some reading and have found that I have what looks like a dana 30 up front and 35 out back. I'm assuming that just upgrading axle shafts won't do enough, so I need an axle upgrade. I figure with the amount of mudding that I do, I could upgrade to dana 44's, upgrade their shafts, and be ok. Is there anywhere in central Florida where I can find those axles? And if and when I do, who can I trust to put them in? Email, or call me at 517 315 8281 if you've got any ideas. And if there are any jeep get togethers planned around Orlando I'd love to know. I need to find new Jeep friends here. I just moved here from Michigan, and this is my 5th Jeep. 2 CJs, a Yj and 2 TJs. Thanks.

I hate to tell you this, but it sounds as though your jeep was done with serious mediocrity. A dana 44 front isn't much stronger then a dana 30. They both use the same u-joints and ball joints. The rubicon housing has the same inner and outer c's, and the same small, thin axle tubes as the 30 has. A rear is also really pushing it's limits with 37's and that's with superior shafts. A dana 35 is just a time bomb with that setup.

Your jeep also has way to much lift. Especially body lift, but spring lift as well. And that longarm kit is known for it's poor geometry. To be honest it looks as though the previous owner built a mall crawler out of some of the cheapest parts money can buy. Hate to burst your bubble but those are the facts.

Yeah, I figured a lot of it out on my own after I bought it. I do appreciate the honesty though. I'm just trying to figure out where to go from here. I can't just quick fix and sell it to somebody else because of my damn conscience. In Michigan my mechanic was also my neighbor and one of my closest friends. He and my dad (and other neighbor) died within 2 years of each other and I bailed on Michigan. Otherwise he would have just come with me when I bought and and told me what was up, or if I had it, I could have just bought parts and helped him put them on. Probably complete 60's he'd have found somewhere for a good price. So parts prices are going to suck, and labor will be just as wonderful. Well I dug the hole, and I can't just drive out of it.

I'd agree with the guys above on too much lift. That 3" body lift is the worst, forget your axle. It's putting a ton of unneeded stress on your Jeep. I would swap that out first before I went to fix an axle. Your Dana 30 should be fine. If you're concerned, put in better shafts and U joints.
As for the rear...find some junkyards, look around. You'll have to regear any 44 you find though, 3.73 or 4.10 won't cut it.

Don't over think it. You just want the axle to be centered under the Jeep. Put the axle where it should be, adjust your track bar to the correct length, and bolt it up.

The point I was trying to make is that since the 8.8 already has it's pinion offset to the passenger side, you need to make sure you're getting it centered to avoid vibrations. Not only are you fighting the typical vibrations seen from needing to adjust the pinion vertically, you now have things offset horizontally as well which adds to the problem.
