buying used jeep. Need advise please

Hey guys, after driving 400 miles to KY to look at a 98 Wrangler that turned out to be junk. I decided I better look at a little newer one. I found an 04 X that I'm going to look at tomorrow. Is there anything you can tell me to look for that may help me. I'm not a mechanic other than doing oil, spark plug etc. I know oil in the tailpipe of that other one was a red flag. Any advise is welcomed.

CarFax.

Drive it, listen for squeals, engage the transfer case, check low and hi range. Check the underside to see if it's been bounced off rocks.... Other than that, it's pretty straightforward. Look at it like any other used car.

If you're unsure get a mechanic to look at it.

What are you plans for the jeep? The dana 44 rear is the better axle, and as I recall that year X model it was not an option. The dana 44 has a metal square fill plug in the diff cover. Well worth it if you plan to offroad down the road.

Also check the 4wd both high and low, pull back the carpet, make sure HVAC works on all settings.

Thanks for the advise, I'll be sure to check these things. I don't plan on anything serious off road other than mild trail riding. I've never even driven a Jeep but we've had snow and ice the last couple of years and tornado damage to have to try and drive through, so 4x4 sound needed and nothing looks cooler than a jeep with the top off.

Good point on the D44. They were an option in 04 and are much more desirable.

While its running, pop the oil filler cap and check for smoke. It will give you an idea of the condition of the top end. No smoke=good to go.

I'll check the oil fill cap, thanks. If it doesn't have a D44, still ok but the best. Will check it.
