Can't figure this rearview mirror thing

Hello everyone, soo when I first got my Jeep, i noticed the rearview mirror had compass/temp on it, which i'm pretty sure isn't stock. It worked on and off for a month or so, now nothing comes up, but the dome lights still work. I tried to follow the wires but they go into the top of the windshield and i dont know how to get all that trim off, btw its a soft top... Nor could I find a place the 1st owner wired it in... anyone know if theres a usual place or way this would be wired that i could check? the mirror looks just like this one:

50-GENK31 - Gentex Automatic dimming Mirror with Map Lights and Compass - Quadratec

any ideas?

To get the trim off, there are some screws on the side by the door opening and friction clips. Just pull after you get the screws out.

likely bad wiring job. get the trim off and chase the wires. see if its even 1/2 proper.

if it was wiring issue it may have fried the board inside the mirror.

My '04 Unlimited has the wiring for it, but just has a standard mirror.
So...it is probably stock, but may have been installed by the PO.

Either way, I agree it's probably a bad connection somewhere.

Have one of those in my 2003 as well. It is OE and was on the Jeep as an option. Started having problems lately with it. While the other lights in the mirror work just fine, the compass / temperature display sometimes doesn't light up right away or may light up but dimly. I expect the fault is in the mirror itself but will be removing it and its wiring to check the problem out further.
Anybody been there, done that with this problem?

The wiring runs down the passenger side of the windshield frame to 7 pin connector just in front of the passenger side defroster vent. You have to pry off the dash top cover to see it. That connector is wired into the harness if it is a factory install. If it is not wired into the harness, or there is not a 7 pin connector, the mirror was added.

Thanks. The mirror was included on the options list for the vehicle. The dash cover that needs to be pried up, is it that narrow piece that goes between the dash and the windshield? I've had that up before, to tighten nuts holding the dash on, just clips in place.

Yes, it is the narrow piece that goes between the dash and the windshield.

Sorry to dig this thread up again, but I just bought a OE auto dim compass/ temp mirror from a jeeper that parted out a '06 rubi. I have all parts needed sensor/bracket, mirror, harness. I have everything installed but I cannot find the small flat connector in the dash/ defroster area. My TJ is a '05 X. I gave it a good look over and could not find any tied up or unused plugs, looks like Im going to have to wire it in myself.... -Todd

I assume you pulled up the defrost trim panel on top of the dash. I have a connector right on top on the passenger side.

I could not find factory wiring on my '06 X. It may only be wired on the unlimiteds.

Here's a picture of a connection on my Jeep, there are seven wires. Perhaps there's another connection in back of the dash somewhere or maybe the cable is tucked above the windshield. The cable just plugs into the mirror.

Some points:
- the mirror has to jive with the temperature sensor used
- the compass needs to be calibrated for the magnetic declination in your location. Mine was set for the magnetic declination at the factory (Zone 8, and I'm in Zone 12). It's a simple adjustment, all explained in the Owner Manual. Any compass in any vehicle you have should be checked for proper Zoning. My Van was set for Zone 10, so I corrected that. Now the compasses in both vehicles read the same.
- if the display goes dim or blank, it's a defect in your display not your wiring, likely sensitive to higher ambient temperatures. Write the mirror manufacturer, explaining the defect, giving them your model #, to see what they might do for you. There's a bunch of info on the back of the mirror. Give them that and it should include a part #. From mine:
Quote:
On the Passenger's side: TE13010404 and below it: GNTX-221 The E1 portion has a big circle around it

On the Driver's side: 09/23/02 FA240 1 20535 and below it: 5515613741 905-524
The bolded is the part# which the manufacturer may have as 905-0524 in their listing.

Check the connectors at the far end of the connector you cannot find. On min, these connectors are not populated with the wires needed for the mirror. So I believe my X does not have the mirror wiring in the harness. My X does have the temperature sensor and wiring.

No Dash Harness Either

I took the dash vent out and I don't have the harness either, although I DO have the sensor and wiring from the grille. I guess there is an intermediate harness that goes between wherever the sensor wiring ends and the dash and another from the dash up to the mirror. Is there a part number for the intermediate harness and does the mirror have enough cable length to make it to the dash? Any ideas?

Hey sonofasailor3, did you find anything out with the harnesses? I'm in the same boat as you are with my '06 X. My wiring from the sensor ties into the main harness and there is no harness by the dash. Unless you found something out, I'm probably going to go with a thread I found in jeepforum.com that shows you how to wire up one of the GNTX-177 mirrors from scratch. If I can figure out how to include the link, I will.

Well, I figured out how to add pictures but I didn't know how to get the link without navigating away from the page. hmmm

O.K. here is the link:

No, GRock, I didn't find anything. I'm in exactly the same boat as you... no harness but with sensor. I just wonder where the harness would attach under the dash.

sonofasailor3, it looks like I'll be going with the directions found in the link I mentioned earlier, I'll let you know how it goes. I know it's not going to have that "factory installed" look but his installation is still nice and clean.
By-the-way, are you a parrothead?

Long time Parrothead

Yep, GRock. In fact, I've been a Parrothead since before the term was coined. Living in Mobile, I remember Buffett playing in some of the bars and lounges in town before he became well known. I also did some sailing in the 70's and in those days he was sort of a cult phenomenon with sailors. We used to trade homemade cassettes withe other boats (yeah, I'm THAT old) at marinas we stopped in, and you would always hear a Buffett song playing from at least one boat everywhere.
