Carpet is on its way out

So yesterday I drove the Jeep to work. About lunchtime we get an unexpected 3 inches of rain. I thought my buddy was joking when he passed me on my way out and said "your Jeep is full of water". Boy those Weathertech mats really hold a lot! I drove home holding my feet up (tough to do with a stick).

Anyway, I pulled and tossed all the carpet except what is in the front. The drain plugs were already out. I'm thinking about pulling the rest of the carpet up front. I noticed there is a heat shield under the carpet on the passenger side. Does it really get that warm? Also, what is the metal box in front of the console?

I have been thinking about the herculiner option, well I bought it yesterday so I guess thinking is in the past. I have heard that the floor gets warm and a little more noise but I live in Florida and I have the top off as much as the rain allows, I don't know if the noise will overpower the wind but who cares its a jeep. Whats the worst that will happen? If I can't hear my radio I will upgrade my speakers

I don't have carpet in my TJ, I went to Tractor Supply and bought a heavy duty pickup bed mat for a short wheel base truck. Took a utility knife and cut mats for the front and rear floorboards and cut a piece for the area where the rear seat is located. I don't have rear seat in the jeep, the bed mat is very durable and is great to use for this application.

I'd be curious to see some pics.

I put mine in for the few cold months/weeks we have, but that's about it. Too much upkeep with the ever looming chance of showers. Plus I fish too much (or not enough).

I say dump the carpet and rhino-line/hercu-line. Never have to worry about it again.

Did raptorliner on mine a year ago. I got tired of the inside of my jeep smelling like gym socks. I like the liner and I don't really notice any more noise than when I had carpet

No carpet here. Just Rugged Ridge heavy duty floor mats. I haven't really noticed a problem with heat. Would like to line the tub at some point, but it's been fine with no carpet.

The metal box underneath the front of the console is the air bag sensor. I've tried running without the carpets and it's too loud and too hot inside without them. I would just let them dry out and put them back in.

I pulled the carpet out the first day I had mine. I did it on the last TJ I owned too. I roll it up, store it, and when I sell the Jeep I have nice clean carpet to put in it. I just run with Husky mats.

No carpet for 2 years, just 1/4" thick rubber matts that I cut for it. No problems with heat or noise.

Yep, I got caught in a downpour yesterday with the windows out and the doors off. I pulled all the carpet and I'll be surprised if they ever get put back in, unless I decide to sell the TJ. I did notice the heat warning sticker under the front carpets, but even driving with flip flops on it didn't get too hot.

Thanks all. The carpet was old and nasty, so no way it's going back in. I have the Weathertech mats, front and back. The back seat is gone and that carpet has been out for awhile. I pulled out and tossed the piece behind the seats (foot well for rear passengers) and the side pieces up front. All I still have is the big front piece. I need to see how well it did or didn't dry, then I'll decide to pull it now or wait. I'm not concerned with noise (like mentioned above, I'll just get new speakers . I'm only worried about the heat.

I can't rhinoline just yet, no facilities. I do have the front mats though.

Thanks for the info on that mysterious box
