Catalytic Converter ?

I have a question and need some help. My 2000 Sahara 4.0L is throwing a code showing a bad cat. (I have replaced all the 02 sensor's & it is still showing same code).

The shop I took it to told me that they need to replace the dual cats that come off the manifold, but that is not my question or concern. My jeep is a Calif. emission setup and I noticed that the guy I got it from has removed the third cat that connects in front of the muffler. The shop told me that I do not need to replace that one since it does not have any sensors hooked up to it and my computer would not even know that it is there.

My question is will not having that cat in place do any damage or burn out my new cats that I am installing???

Thanks for the help.

The sensors only look at the first two mini cats on the downpipe... the third is there to pick up the what the others didn't... it cannot hurt your downpipe cats at all if you don't have the third cat.

The only situation you may run into is the visual inspection.... all CA compliant emissions are checked pretty thorough and many not pass by the smog Nazi's without it. Keep that in mind.

TnDzTJ,

Thank you, that's what I thought. I live in Oregon so I do not have to deal with the smog Nazis.
The guy I traded the Jeep for moved up from CA, and he had it modified right before moving to Oregon. He and his wife are SO HAPPY to be out of CA.

Thanks again,
Paul

Gotchya....

Sounds good then.... I don't know what you are paying for your downpipe, but Rock Auto has got some SUPER prices on the downpipes that I cannot find anybody to beat yet..... FYI

Thanks I will check them out. Had one shop tell me that they could get the right cats and install them for $900.00 I told them no thanks.

I guess the CA model that I have to use for my Jeep is twice as expensive as non-CA models--Great

Thanks again,
Paul

yea... they are... I have a CA model and the stealerships want like $700 or better... I found a suitable one on Rock Auto for around $300-$500. I can get away with a 49 state downpipe here... not sure if you can there. Our Ca compliant models monitor the two small cats on the downpipe with (4) O2 sensors, there are no sensors on the large third cat.

Use less info here....maybe someone else will chime...my '04 Sport has 4 02 sensors. And I do understand that there is not a sensor "attached" to the last cat...but my TJ kept throwing the codes...and later that cat plugged and When I replaced it that code went away...is it possible that the sensors can "tell" when that cat is "bad" either plugging (in my case) or not there in your case?

just my .02

jp2611,

The shops around here gave me the same info. that TnDz TJ gave me. The third cat missing will have nothing to do with one of the upper cats plugging or going bad, plus the computer does not even recognize if the third cat is in place or not ( Jeep dealer told me that).
The funny thing is the dealer told me not to bring it into them, because they would put it back to original at a cost to me of $1,500.00
