Catalytic Converter, O2 Sensor Issues

Hey, I have a 97 TJ Sahara 4.0 L. I am in the process of restoring and enhancing it and I am running into some issues. My catalytic converter went bad so someone told me to remove the brick inside and run it as a straight pipe. They said it would be fine for me to install my new Magnaflow muffler on to it. My Jeeps check engine light came on after I did this. I know it has something to do with the O2 Sensor (which also needs to be replaced). My questions are…

Do I need an O2 sensor?
If so how do I get that check engine light off?
How will all of this effect my gas mileage and power?

I thought I would be able to just run a straight pipe and cut the cat off but apparently its illegal in some states. Don't want to get in trouble for that.

Any advice would be great! Thanks.

first off, welcome to the forum. yes you need an o2 sensor. if it's the one after the catalytic converter, then all it does is monitor the catalyst to make sure it's still doing what it's supposed to do. i don't know if it will work on a wrangler or not, but on my mustang i was able to put a spark plug non-fouler on the end of the o2 sensor (after i removed the cat) and i never got a check engine light. it catches enough exhaust to give a reading, but not enough to give a bad reading. they were only like $4 at autozone. does your state require emissions testing? if so, you'll have to have a cat on it. there should be no ill effects to gas mileage or power. to turn the check engine light off, disconnect your battery and let it sit for a little while.

Can anyone tell me how the flux capacitor is used to facilitate time travel?

Catalytic coverters are required in all states for on road vehicles. If you have gutted the cat you are running without a cat. If you are worried about getting in trouble replace the cat. this should take care of your 02 sensor code(assuming the code is for the downstream 02) and make you legal.

Thanks guys for the advice. I might try to non-fouler on the end of the O2. I dont think I have to worry about my Jeep passing vehicle inspection... FL doesn't require one. Even when I lived in NC, all they did was look at my lights and windshield. I will let you guys know how it turns out.
