CB antenna and jerry can location

I recently installed my Uniden 520xl CB. I mounted a 4' firestik antenna on a mounting bracket over the driver's side rear light. My jerry can is on the same side and within about 4 inches of it.

My question is there any real hazzard of shock or EMI having the antenna that close to a closed fuel can? The radio puts out (advertised) 7 watts of power and when I set the SWR, it was between 1.2 (CH 1) and 1.4 (Ch 40).

Any insight into the level of concern I should have would be appreciated!

You're OK. No sparks will come from the cable or antenna with the factory power output.

Back in the day I had an 275w linear and it would draw an arc on a foggy day.

With it stock you should have no problems.I just would not plan on putting a linear on it unless you move the antenna.I had a 500/1000 watt linear and could light up a 4' florescent light bulb with it on high key by holding it close to the antenna while keying the mic.I could even set off security lights on low key.I could also trigger alarms in department stores with it on high.I even have a police report to prove that one.

Thanks guys. I won't (well, probably won't) be upgrading anything with the radio. Plenty for me. Don't need to talk to Austrailia with it

All our Navy HF antennas had "radhaz" circles but we were putting out up to 1000 watts too.

Appreciate it.

Yeah it was pretty cool. The funny thing is that linear was worth a few pennies and after removing from my truck I can not find it now so I figure someone else is setting off security alarms with it.That was a wild night there.I was talking to someone about 40 miles from were I was and could reach them fine without the linear but I was being goofy and kicked it to high.Well I was cruising around a small local city and had entered and exited a few shopping center parking lots and after coming out of around the 3rd parking lot I notice the police going in the lot kind of fast and this happened for the next few parking lots I went in and came back out the law would barrel in right behind me.Well anyway I pulled over beside one that I knew and asked what was going on and then he told me that all the alarms in the department stores were going off one after another. So we were setting in front of JC Penny and I asked if it had went off yet and he said no so I said hang on.I keyed the mic and held it a few seconds and sure enough dispatch radioed him that it was now going off at JC Penny so needless to say they were not happy about that.

I used to piss off all my neighbors with my ham radio in high school (in the pre-cable days). Nothing makes your stomach sink faster than seeing the FCC van run past your house in the afternoon ...
