Looking to install a CB radio in my jeep for long trips with my club but I'm not sure of any really great ways to mount it. Anyone have any ideas besides the pre built mount systems you can buy online. I think I want it on my dash or overhead.
Tuffy also sells overhead consoles. I have the dual overhead console. It's pretty bulky and squeaks a lot. I took it out, but I may give it a second shot.
Dam Patrick, are you afraid of the dark....... I couldn't help but notice a lot of lanterns in the background..... you must be a collector ....... they look really nice, all kidding aside.
Rob
I had thought about mounting something from side to side but the aluminum square tube I bought was a abit to short..... this is precisely where measure first comes to play.
Drilled two holes in the top of the tray and ran the wires behind the dash. Add in some quick disconnect connectors and you can take it out to keep it from getting stolen or rained on.

Mine is mounted on the floor between the seat frame bracket and rocker panel. Stays hidden from filthy thieves and out of my way. You just have to count the clicks when changing channels.
I setup mine similar to Jaxon, drilled straight into the dash. It cuts it close to hitting my leg (5'10"), but doesn't actually come in contact with it.
Not any worse than stacking two overhead. Having been in a front collision and having my forehead remove the rear view mirror off the inside of the windshield, I'd prefer the leg hit.
I'm also one that can't handle the mike cord dangling in my vision so I built this one for Kat after having CB's mounted overhead, on the side of the console, under the dash, and similarly poor locations.
In my LJ, I initially attached my CB to the factory roll bar with hose clamps.
This put the speaker near my ear, and the mic looped up over the bar. The adjustments were awkward at first, but I got used to it.
Later, I moved the CB to the panel between the spreaders when I installed the front roll bar section in the LJ. Same place I had it mounted when I had the CJ:

I did the same on the roll bar...what i liked about it is i could hear the speaker since it was right by my ear, and any one that was over 6' would bump there knees where i had it previously which was down below the glove box....the only negative was changing the channels, but the rear view worked just fine!
Tried a few other locations but really like and settled on this one.
Buy a bunch of two-piece shaft collars the size to fit around your sport cage, McMaster-Carr is my preference, in aluminum so they don't rust and still conduct electrical grounds. Once you start, you find a hundred uses, I have aux lights, third brake light, extinguisher mount, etc etc etc using them.
Mounted where mine is, it also takes just an eight foot coax antenna cable to reach the behind the brakelight antenna mount

Mounted mine with small earth magnets designed to hold a few pounds each, 3 side by side wrapped in shrink tube and epoxied to the back of the Midland 75-822. I epoxied the other 3 to the back of the center console after I roughed up the surface a little. This is an all in one unit so I just need to install antenna and run cable and I'll just plug it In when I need it.
As I said, I did mine on a YJ, spaced it 3" back to access the screws for my hard top, but im sure there is a way to space it for the TJs, or bend it accordingly.
Since you have a late model TJ you could go this route. I personally don't like the overhead way :hide:, I don't want to have the mic cord swinging around in my vision. Just me.
I agree.. I mounted mine in the same place you did but more to the left- above the 4wd lever.
