I have a Uniden 520XL that I'm really happy with. We use it on trails, and it's as clear as a bell, and gets out good.

X3 on the Uniden 520XL recommendation. I've been using that particular model CB for 17 years and it's been bulletproof even though it has been coated in dirt nearly all that time. The only other brand I believe to have as good of quality as Uniden does is Midland.

Here's another vote for the Uniden 520XL. I have it mounted on the left side of the instrument cluster with the Rugged Ridge mount. I love it.

I run the Uniden PRO-520XL great for price! Amazon usually has them for <$50

3 to 4 foot Firestick.
Fiberglass.
Extremely easy to install (once you add a mounting bracket).
They just screw into place.

The hardest part of an "antenna install" is having a good ground.
Once you have the "grounding" problem fixed, you can go to any good CB shop, & have them tune your antenna. Basically, they are getting your SWRs as low as they can be.

You can install the most expensive CB radio. But If the antenna's SWRs aren't tuned, you're not going to be able to reach very far, and you're not going to be able to hear a lot of the conversations.

I finally, after about a year of trying to get the ground problem fixed, bought a firestik II. one has to trim off the top of the original firestik antenna to set swr. You can't add back to the antenna if you have to. The firestik II has a " bolt" at the top to screw in and out to adjust swr.

Uniden 505XL $38 on Amazon. It exceeded my expectations. Paired with 3' firestick. I believe even more compact than the 520XL.

I'm also running a Uniden Pro520-XL on a Rugged Ridge Mount (the one that bolts to the left hand side of the dash, and a 2ft FireStick on a passenger tail light mount, and works like a charm. Only thing I need for this setup is a microphone extension cable so my son can talk on the CB with his buddies.

Anther vote for the uniden 520xl. I got mine from Www.rightchannelradios.com as a package deal and it came with everything I needed for the install. I opted for the Wilson flex antenna due to the abundance of low hanging tree branches in the he places that I wheel.

I have the Cobra 75 WX ST and I love it! It takes up so much less room with all the controlls on the mic

The 75WXST has two drawbacks that are big enough why I'd never buy one... 1) the speaker inside the mic is necessarily so tiny that it doesn't put out enough volume to be heard easily in a noisy open Jeep and 2), if the mic went out, you can't just buy an inexpensive generic replacement mic at your local truck stop or CB store like you can for a standard CB.

I also have a CB but for those who don't know , they are not good to communicate with if you are by your self , get into trouble and need help . You need either a ham radio or , better yet , a Spot locator of some sort . A cb is good for talking to the Jeeps you are wheeling with .

I used one of these many years ago. You're right. The sound quality, coming out of the mic, was really terrible. If I remember correctly, the little metal box (where the microphone screwed into) had a place to plug in an external speaker. You could mount the speaker somewhere where you'd be able to hear more clearly.

But, to do it the right way, that would require you to take & pass a test. Most folks just want to plug the radio in and talk.

Used to be that someone was always monitoring Channel 9 for emergencies. Nowadays, Channel 9 just doesn't mean much any more.

I've been looking pretty hard at this.

Some say they love it and other say they hate it.

I agree with you to me it looks like it would take up waaay less room and could be easily taken out of the jeep.

As far as hearing it Looks like hooking up and external speaker would be no problem.

The only time I would really use it is wheeling with a group and to be honest usually it's just me and another person and for that 2 way radios have worked great so far.
