Center Console Sub

First post here ... looking to upgrade the sound system on my '03 and wondering if it is worth it to replace the driver in the console or just spend the extra $$$ and go with the Bazooka 6 1/2" powered bass tube. I've heard nothing but praise for the bazooka, but for security sake, would I be able to get any useable bass out of the center sub? Thanks!

Hi!
I did that.
It was an interesting adventure to say the least. Like wrestling a cat into a wash tub.
Mine is an 06 with the sub in the center console. When I replaced the factory sub and had the factory unit, it did improve the sound tremendously BUT when I replaced the factory head unit with an aftermarket the factory amp didn't seem to like it and I lost most of the output from the sub.

Another thing I noticed is that because of the location in the console the sub is blocked by the seat and my rump. The sound couldn't fight it's way out as well as I had hopled that it would.

I eventually found and installed an all in one aftermarket sub/amp that isn't much for fancy but was inexpensive and greatly improved the sound of they system.

Overall if I had it to do over again I would just bypass the sub in the console and install something in the rear. Now I have a great little sub in my console that I can barely hear. Maybe someday I'll try hooking it up to an amp and see what happens.

oh yea, there is the whole "rattle thing" too with a better sub. Everything in your console rattles.

^don't worry 90% of those "powered" subs don't do much at all and they are over priced for what you get.

I plan to do the same thing. Stock head unit aftermarket amp and speakers.

However my '01 doesn't have the sub or box in the console. So I ordered one from a salvage yard. It gets here today and I am going to see if I can squeeze an 8" into it.

With the right setup I think it will hit nicely.....not make your ears bleed, but fill in some of the lows.

I bought one at - of all places *cough*WalMart For $75.
It's a VR3 (brand) VRA1.0 PSW but you can't find them any more. I got mine in April and a month later they discontinued them.

I bought it because it has a heavy plastic shell. I figured it would be great because it would be water and crud resistant. For the most part it works fine and sounds great! At least until I really turn it up then the speaker maxes out and makes a THWOCK sound that aggravates me.
I think that I will eventually try to find a different 8" sub to put in it to see if it will be better.

I just don't know enough about stereo stuff to know what the heck I'm doing most of th etime and I have to ask my buddies for help.

WalMart has a replacement for it now that looks OK. About $100, all in one but it has a neon thing going on and I don't much think I want to hang a disco ball in the back of my rig, if you know what I mean. They sell a 1 year extended warranty too for $5.99 so if it blows. you get a replacement or your money back. Naturally I bought it. I figured it was cheap insurance.

When you DO go shopping for a sub to put in the center console, you have to find one that is a low profile. Standard subs are too deep to fit in there.

you can always go through crutchfield's customer chat to talk to someone who will give you the best advice on how to do it right.
