center console sub options

hey all, i tried to post this question in the communication board, but didnt get a response, and i've read my heart out but cant seem to find the specifics of what i'm looking for.
i've got a 2000 wranger. just got it a couple of months ago. i've done some tune up work and replaced the head unit with a jvc, the dash speakers with kappa 5 1/4's and kappa 6.25's in the sound bar.
now i'm looking for a little more bass. not really looking to hit really hard. just to round the sound out a little.
when i got the wrangler it didnt have a center console, but i've come across one at a junkyard and it's got the 6 3/4 woofer, amp and speaker box in the console.
ive read about loads of folks throwing in a 10" sub, but i cant find the details as to how they're doing this. using the sub box? moding the console? building a box behind the seat?
i'd rather keep the sub,,, or woofer in the console. i'm not afraid to mod either.
have ya'll used the sub box? or just mounted a sub in the console. i'd like to move up to 8" or 10". that being said.... i'm not ashamed to go back to a 6" woofer if i have too.
thanx ya'll!

i'd like to know what options i have with that console sub, and wether or not i need a seperate amp for such an aftermarket sub. i'd just like to keep everything stock from the outside but put a stronger piece in there...

i know everyone said they wanna keep the sub in the center console, but look into a powered sub that will fit in the trunk and take up minimal space...powered subs are great cause you dont lose alot of room for an amp and a box as its all contained with the sub itself. I bought an Infinity Basslink powered sub last year, it fit right into the trunk and only takes up about a third of that small trunk space. Its got a 10" sub in it and it really puts out some bass...more than enough for the jeep

I unplugged my factory sub because I think it blew. It started sounding like crap. I really don't miss it.

I picked up a sub console for mine and want to try and put in a really nice 8". I seen a pic of one with a 10" and it looked weird. I have a Kennwood deck and not the factory stereo in mine so I can't use the factory sub hook up. So I don't know where I would mount an amp at, out of sight that is all I know.

Maybe under the back seat or in the trunk and then pull the carpet up and run your wires under the carpet

I did the same thing, and posted a write up with pics in the electronics and communication forum. I love the way this set up sounds.

Jonny15 no carpet anymore. When I put my stereo things in I was not planning on taking out my carpet. Now I have to go and try and hide wires again.

Would there be to much heat to mount an amp under the back seat? I really like the under seat sub enclosure I don't have the stuff to do that. Is their a company that makes a box like that so you don't have to build it? I like the out of sight thing a whole lot.

Is there any room inside the console for an aftermarket amp (small one, just enough power to actually power the sub)??

I just ordered that 20.00 sub, so I'll see how it sounds...the OE system sounds better without the sub plugged in. ( I suspect its blown)

I could be wrong, but I think an amp will overheat inside the console in less than a half an hour.

I wired it into the stock tape deck for security reasons. The sub uses high level inputs so you just tap into the rear speaker connections for a signal.

I made two L brackets that you see in the picture. Installing it is kinda a pain cuz there is very little room to get your hand in to reattach the seat. But it is doable.

It is only a 8 inch sub, so it isn't ear pounding bass. I think it is perfect. The sub was $109 bucks shipped to my door, and I probably spent another 30 on wiring and what not.

I also used a tape deck adapter to hook my ipod to it. But i took the tape deck apart and ran the wire back thru the dash so you can't see it. The tape just cannot be removed. Again, all for the sake of security.

I am going to make a how to thread later on if you are interested.

The factory amp is in there...I've seen amps installed in more cramped spaces without issue. I believe it depends on the amp, or pure luck, I dunno.

Anywho. I installed the Pyramid sub from the jeepforum.com link above. and wow, my old sub was shot. The foam surround was separated 100% of the way around the OEM sub...no wonder it sounded like ass.

sounds much better now, even on the OEM power. so I'll leave that old amp in there. My OEM sub box already had polyfil in there, not sure if a P.O. did this, or if it was OEM, but thought it noteworthy.

For anyone with a Blown OEM subwoofer, I highly suggest spending 20 bucks and getting the pyramid sub. (if you don't require massive amounts of bass) and just want a little bass to finish off a simple setup.

Here's a link to the sub.

x2 on the powered sub. I went back and forth on this and ended up getting a bazooka 10in powered tube. It fits really well behind the rear seat and if i need to take it out for any reason I can just unplug it and pull it out. The sound is much better than stock even with the top and doors off.

I did a couple of things. When I got my TJ the previous owner had some POS woofer, not even bolted in, sitting in the stock sup enclosure. I found per someone's recommendartion here a 6.5 dual voice coil 2 ohm sub Elemental Designs It took some modifications to the stock sub enclosure to get it to fit. I have not heard a stock sub so I can't compare. I was not overly thrilled with mine. I also purchased a small powered unit (apparently they changed the design and dropped the price a lot from the model I got)Kenwood - KSC-SW10 I originally got it because it fit under the drivers seat but the thumping on the butt got annoying real quick. It fits perfectly under the rear seat. The bass from the powered sub is much better than the output from the one I put in the stock console. Given the two, I would not bother with fixing the stock console one and would have only gone with the powered unit.

Unless you ever take your rear seat out...Then you'll have this shiney thing in the middle of your cargo area just begging to be stolen, or broken by cargo. (just playing devils advocate, as I have taken my rear seat out...namely to take dogs to the Vet). And can't forget, you're paying 100+ for a powered sub, where as an inexpensive OE replacement drop in will cost you 20 bucks.

food for thought.

- I do take the seat out on occasion. If so I just throw a towl or other object over the sub so it is not so obvious when parked.

- The sub is screwed to the floor. It would take work to remove but an educated thief would know that it is not of much use without the full harness and controller which would take additional work to fully remove.

I had a bitchen box built. It even has JEEP molded on to it. It's a two Ten inch speaker box and it hits HARD and I mean HARD. I didn't want two 10's but the jackass talked me into it. Anyway it's a box that sits behind the seat and in front og the tail door. Very cool box. I'll try to get some pics of it. We are now building a center console to hold my cameras for quick access and my 15" Mac Book Pro will swivel out and into a computer center for work. We also have to add in 4 common household wall plugs for some equipment that I use in my Rubicon office. It'll run off an inverter that will be buried up in the engine compartment. The plugs will be flush mount on the center console. Pretty cool huh?
