Changing Coolant..Help!

I am flushing and changing the engine coolant and I drained the coolant out into a bucket. I noticed the reservoir level did not go down. I thought that maybe it would go down once I started the car to plush the system out. I emptied the bucket. I put water in the bucket equal to what came out when I drained it into the reservoir. It never went down and it ended up filling it to the cap. So then I put the rest in through the radiator cap. I ran it for about 5 minutes when I noticed the jeep had water under it and it looks like there were several leaks everywhere. What happened? Why did the reservoir level not go down when I drained it? Is there a bleeder valve that i need to open to relieve the pressure? help

during normal operation coolant is forced into the reservoir or sucked out of it by the radiator due to normal expansion and contraciton of the coolant during heating and cooling. To empty it you simply pull it up off of its mount and discsonnct the hose.
The water you saw underneath was probably the reservoir overflowing as water was forced into it.
