Changing oil timing, suggestion

I generally change my engine oil on my 2001 Sahara 6 cyl around 3,000-4,000 miles within 5 - 7 months but due to my hip replacement and the wife's cataract surgery the Wrangler currently only has about 500 miles since the last change in January 2012. We did make one short trip to Arkansas but mostly it has just set in the back yard most of this time. Wife did drive it to the market a couple of times.

If we get to take a vacation in September we'll probably put another 1,500 miles or so on it. I'm using Castrol 10W-30 oil and Wix filters (which I already have for the next change) and was wondering about the fesibility of waiting another couple of months to change the oil when it will have approximately 2,500 miles and be almost 9 months since the last change. Owner's manual says 7,500 miles or 6 months.

I don't mind the labor or small expense of doing it now but just don't want to unnecessarily waste the oil.

Any suggestions or opinions on this next oil change?

Change it out. Since the jeep sits outside it tends to collect condensation inside the
motor from the temp changes over night. if you drive it every day it burns it off so not such a problem but since it has sit for long periods of time it is best to change it .

Thanks Scott, that was kind of my thoughts after this length of time but still the low mileage was bothering me about unnecessarily using new oil and guess I just needed some confirmation for the oil change. Don't think in all my 60 years driving vehicles have I ever had this few miles on an engine before time to change the oil.

You also might want to throw in some fuel stabilizer if it's going to continue sitting. Having a tank full of bad gas isn't fun.

Dag gum it, never even thought about the fuel situation. It's probably had 2-3 fill ups in the last 7 months but some Stabil sure wouldn't hurt anything. Thanks for that little reminder.

Changed the oil & filter this afternoon. Now on to other things. Thanks for all the advice.
