Check engine light flash, steady, off

I have a 2002 Wrangler Sport and while driving to Gram's house the other day the check engine light started flashing and it had no pick up. Then it went steady and stayed on for a day. My brother is my mechanic and was going to scan for the code but, alas, the light is now off.

I'm reading a lot about misfires and such but now that the light is off scanning it might not pull up the right problem. It's running fine now too. Anyone know what this might be?

On your 2002, you can get the code(s) yourself. Turn the key from OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON. The code will be in the odometer window. Any codes which have occured will be in memory and will be displayed.

Flashing CEL means there is a problem that may damage the catalytic converter(s).

Even though the check engine light is off the code that turned it on is stored in the ECM. You can still read it.

It happened again the other day and now the engine light is off. I'll try to get the code the way suggested.

Thanks everyone!

Just wanted to let everyone know I found the issue. When my brother changed the spark plugs (my Jeep is a 6 cylinder) one of the springs came out of the coil pack which led to the Jeep only running on 5 cylinders and causing the misfire. I had to replace the whole thing instead of just the one bad part and it cost around $100, not including labor (yes, I pay my brother).

I hope this helps someone else down the road who might run into this issue!

If my brother did something and I wanted to pay him labor and he actually took the money I would faint. What are siblings for? I still change my married daughters oil and filter every 3k and she does not pay me anything, not even the oil and filter. But I would never ask her for it, why would a father ever do that. It's her inheritance anyway.

My niece has leukemia. The money goes to her medical bills.
