Check straps/soft top

I have two 06 Jeep Wranglers , a Sport and a Rubicon. I just bought the Rubicon Wednesday. When I got home from riding around and I was putting the top up I noticed the "check strap" that goes between the middle bow for the top to the last bow tore from the rivet. Now I have to have a new top put on. I noticed that my Sport is showing signs of doing the same thing. I am new to Jeep, is this normal for these things to tear so soon? The reason I have two Jeeps by the way is the Sport is my wifes and of course the Rubicon is mine. The strap looks like it is made out of Nylon and is black in color. The Jeep service rep says he has never seen one tear. Can the strap not be replaced by its self? If it is so rare why is my second Jeep going down the same path. I have watched the video that comes with them and I know I'm not being hard on the top when I put it down. What do you guys think?

Sounds like you got a couple of bad ones... I haven't heard of people having this issue, and I haven't had any troubles with mine. I would just make sure that the dealer knows about the second one right away (while the Rubi is in having the new top installed) and see what they say about it. Keep us up to date, and good luck!

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

My '05 Sport had such an poor fitting top (not your strap problem) that both the Jeep dealer and the Rep agreed it had to be replaced. The problem was that no one new how to properly fit it. The two replacement warranty tops that were sent out fit even worse. The dealer finally gave up said he was sorry and for me to take it to another dealer that sold more in the area. I was so sick of the BS I took it home, took it apart, figured it out, machined some custom parts, adjusted it properly and have a perfect fitting top now.

What I learned is that the factory slaps them on without properly adjusting them and has some poorly engineered fitings. Then no one educates the dealers as to the proper way to repair/fit them. I was just lucky to have an engineering backround, naturally mechanical, a small home machine shop, and the time to screw with it.

I even solved the problem of the plastic attachments bending up on each side of the rear window where it attaches to the body.
