Chirping noise question...

I have been in jeeps that makes noises here and there. But the main one that I have heard is that chirping noise that sounds like its from under the dash. Kinda like a bird that wont shut up and you want to shoot it sometimes. What exactly is that thats causeing it to chirp so much? Hope you guys/gals know what im talking about and that im not just hearing things...

So does this chirping noise rise and fall with speed of the vehicle?

i thought that the annoying chrping noise in my jeep came from the dash. but it came from the passengers seat. with a heavy passenger on the seat the chrping was nearly gone.
after spraying some silicone lubricant spray all under the seat it was gone. now i have to spray there all 8-10 months because the chirping comes back after this time.

Hmmm, I was actually thinking it was a cv going out in the front driveshaft. Sounds like Angry Sparrows.

Anytime I touch the dash, the sound stops. I've tried tightening the screws in the dash, but no dice.

Mine does it as well. I found it's the transfer case shifter. Shoved my sunglasses case under it for now. Just a little up pressure makes it stop.

Tomorrow is my day to figure out why it does it.

Good luck with yours.

I'm trying to think of a section of the rig that DOESN'T squeak...

Best solution...get a louder radio

Nope, it just chirps lol... I havent been able to figure out where and whats causing it. Seems like other people are having the same issue but theirs are in different places. Guess im going to have to keep looking to see what causes this.

I've taken the doors off and the top and it just keeps coming from the dash or at least it sounds like that. Any other noise is just from my suspension so I know its nothing to do with that. Its just a constent chirping noise that litterally sounds like birds in the dash. I'll just keep you guys updated if I actually find what causes it and it might help other people with the same issue. Really just started this thread to get an idea and if anyone had a solution besides louder speakers.

Had the same prob in my 99 XJ from the day I drove it off the new car lot. Dealer just told me it was b/c I used armor all on the dash. Wore me out so bad I could hear it in my sleep. Wound up trading it in on another. Sounds stupid but it became a matter of principle and sanity after 2 years of it.

I went to the local craft store "see: Wal-Mart" and got some rolls of felt tape, went around the edges of all the removable trim pecies. Not a single squeek or rattle now.

Also had the front seat squeek the tilt slide rollers got dry from spraying out the jeep a bit much, new grease, no squeeks

Need more information:

Is your "fan motor" on when it's chirping? Try turning the the selector to"off" and see if it goes away. If it does then it could be associated with something lodged in the fan motor itself.

Any updates

I have a chirping noise under the dash too. It is most noticeable with the AC on, auto transmission in drive. However, when I accelerate the noise goes away. Driving down the road I hear it occassionally when I hit a bump in the road. It is very noticeable at stop lights. It sounds like a loose washer chirping or ringing, so I thought it was something loose on the blower. But, I can't explain why it goes away when I start to accelerate.
I can not hear the chirp/ringing outside of the 2005 Jeep LJ Unlimited. Although, the AC compressor does seem to make somewhat of a gargling noise.

There is a TSB on the 2.4L serpentine belt chirp.

Tsb

Sorry, "TSB?

Is that a reference to another thread? I haven't tried anything with the belt yet because it sure does sound like it is coming from under the dash. I can't hear the noise when I look under the hood, but as soon as I get inside and close the doors I can.

TSB Techinal Service Bulletin. Dealers get them from the manufacturers to address common compliants but are not recalls.

Not the belt

I changed out the belt. The old one still looked good, but i changed it anyway. The pulleys all spun free.

The chirp is still there. Although now that the weather is truning cooler, it is taking longer to start chirping. My next step is to start taking apart the dash and see if I can find something loose around the AC blower.

Sometimes the speedometer cable can start to squeak like that. Not sure if the TJ speedo is connected by a cable or not. Just another idea.

I had posted on another "Squeaky Thread" found my squeak is the hood. Hot days it squeaks, cold days not so much or none at all. Hood latches seem to stretch in the heat (Been around and in the 90's for over a month now). May order new latches or even metal ones. I'm one that if I know where and what the squeak is, if it isn't hurting anything I just ignore. Besides, with top off at 60 I don't hear it so much

Thanks,

I dismantled the dash and it is deffinitely not coming from there. I'll pay attention to the hood latches, but I can hear it even when the car is stopped if the AC is on. I'm begining to think it may just be something to do with the AC compressor and the noise is somehow channeled inside.

It isn't very loud or bothersome, I'm just on a quest now to figure it out. thanks for the help.

I'll check the spedometer cable too. Since the noise goes away when I accelerate, it makes sense that it is either speedometer cable or something to do with the belt.

Thanks,

But that is not the noise. Mine is more of a light chirp. I really think it is belt or pully related because it is definitely effected by load and rpms and bumbs on the road. When parked, I can't really hear it under the hood.

Mine has the friggin chirp to, but it is in the dash for sure. It only does it when it hits bumps and you can press real hard on the dash or kick it underneath and it will stop for a little bit. I have to change the heater core so I'll find and tighten everything back up when I do that job.

Glad I'm not alone. I agree. It has got to be coming from in the dash. I can't hear it outside of the Jeep at all and I've crawled all around it. Funny thing is that it is at its worst when I have the AC on and the car in drive (its an automatic). But, once I start to hit the gas, the chirp goes away almost entirely until I hit a bump. If it is coming from inside the dash, I can't figure out how all those things are related.

Go Hogs!

I've taken the dash apart and haven't found the source. I can hear the chirp outside the jeep only when I put my ear up close to the vent that located in the center of the cowl (between the hood and the windshield). There was hot air blowing out of that vent, but I'm afraid I don't know enough about my jeep to understand exactly what is under that cowl. It looks like it is easy enough to remove. Does anyone have any suggestions on whether or not I should mess with removing the cowl to see if there could be anything under it making the chirp. Or, should i just live with the annoying little chirp?

I found mine. Next time your is chirping, lightly pull up on the 4x4 lever. Bet it stops. Mine has a bushing wore out. I would have bet the title it was coming from under the dash, but it was the 4x4 lever. Dont engage it, just pull up on it a little.
