Anyway bit of an old thread, but what the heck, I'll piss everyone off: in 10 years, black will be the new chrome...heck its already played out. Jeeps, bikes, rat rods, muscle cars, 'tuners' (Civics with fart can mufflers and big ass wings)...you name it, its been blacked out as its 'bad'

The search for 'chromed out' (rather than 'blacked out') is just as sickening, but since everyone seems to be on that side, no need to post it

Personally, I see no reason to restrict yourself to these two clichés. If chrome is appropriate, absolutely use it. If black is appropriate absolutely use it. But there are plenty of 'rugged' colors that aren't black. There are plenty of eye popping colors you could use rather than chrome. No idea how these would look on a silver LJ, but in general, I'd be more likely to use wheels of this color, rather than polished or black:

When I purchased my jeep it had chrome rocker panels on it. I have been going with the Red/Black theme but everytime I mention changing them to black my wife complains. She likes them for some reason. Eventually I will change them and take the heat over spending the extra money. I actually like the wheels though.

Black definitely. In fact today I am spraying my headlight bezels to get rid of the chrome... after I remove the milk jugs.
I agreed that some color is ok for accent -just not big on chrome. I am thinking of painting my grill a dark gray for some "color"

3 years ago I had chrome. Chrome headlight bezels, grill, hood latches, stainless winshield/door brackets. I hated them every day since. 2 weekends ago I finally got off my lazy arse and blacked them out with spray on bedliner. I have received more compliments in these past 2 weeks than the 3 years of chrome.

Dont do chrome if you want some shine go for a brushed look. Or a two tone black with a brushed look?

DUDE! Everyone knows Chrome makes you go FASTER

I usually don't add chrome because I actually wheel and hate spending all that hard earned cash on something I know I am going to ruin

It all really depends on the Jeep IMO. I think my Jeep would look good with Chrome or black

I am OLD SKOOL - Moderate Chrome

I miss my '63 RED Chevy Impala convertible with REAL Chrome (metal not plastic) bumpers and baby moons. Back then Chrome was Chrome ans nobody blacked anything out !

I decided to get rid of the factory canyon wheels & go with black. I like the look, and my son tells me my new wheels & tires look "way sick"; (I'm assuming that's a good thing). The wife is not a fan of black, she prefers "bling", which is why her brand new Compass has chrome wheels. I've seen what can be done with rattlecan bedliner, and as soon as it gets warmer......WATCH OUT!!

On the old CJ's, chrome accents are very retro cool. For me, they don't work as well on TJ's.

Not to hate on black wheels, but you really are seeing it everywhere and it looks uninspired. I am more of a fan of brushed aluminum wheels. Oh and the AEV darkened gun-metal wheels are awesome! I'd rather see more of that than black wheels.

Oh, and I really don't get painting the headlight bezels black. The silver/chrome finish blends in with the headlight glass and metal housing to even notice! If you are going to do that, why don't you also get those ghetto smoke lens covers on your headlights too? Ha! Kidding!

But as is mentioned by most of you... it is all personal preference and no hate from me here if you dig the black.

As mine is right now (because I just got her), thankfully, there is no chrome.... once I finish the only thing that will be chrome is the inside of the headlights. There won't even be the gray. It will be all black on red, even the Jeep logo will be black.

Two things.
First, paint the rocker panels with black Plasti-dip. Runs about $8 for a can, goes on easy, peels off easy if you don't like it. I have used it on my Ranger to black out all the trim and logos and I'm about to do some touch ups on the Jeep with it. You could even paint the rims with it if you want to see it with blacked out rims... or you could just wait until I get my new wheels. lol
Which leads me to #2... how do you like those Grabbers? I am about to order a set with black Soft 8 rims for my '06 Red TJ. What size are those? I plan on going with 33's.

That's a good idea. I'll give it a try. I'm liking the Generals Grabbers. Mine are 31's. The are holding up well. They aren't wearing quickly and handle good in bad weather. They are quiet for mud tires. I recommend them.

Dechroming

I am dechroming - going to body color (Desert Sand Pearlcoat) on headlamp rings and wheels - black on wheel hubs and lug nuts. I have black hard and soft tops. I like my Jeep to look like the great machine it is !

I ended up getting Duratracs. A guy that I know at Goodyear made me an offer of $180 per tire... I said yes. lol

I like them.
...and I stick by my original vote. BLACK!

You can't put enough Chrome on a Jeep. I do say it depends on the color. Light jeeps need black and dark need Chrome. Red looks better with black and a black jeep needs all the chome you can buy.
