Question Cigar Lighter Replacement Help

This seems like one of those things that should be a no brainer but I think I just another pair of eyes for this to make sense. I need to replace the actual socket in the dash and I couldn't find an exact fit for it. I know they are "universal" but frankly the closest one I could find doesn't fit worth a damn (The outer housing where the black or negative wire connects does not fit and from the picture it wasn't used in OEM.). Anyways how does the connection work between these two things. I can't remove the old plastic connectors without cracking them. They are riveted in.

And Yes, I did check the fuses.

The outer shell on your replacement unscrews then you put the inner piece into the hole from the front of your dash then screw the outer back on and tighten down. Your negative wire goes on the terminal on the outer shell, and the positive goes on the center terminal, you will need to cut the wires off your old plug and attach spade terminals to them to do this. Other wise you can go to the dealer and get the oem lighter socket.

I was trying that actually, but the housing where the negative connection is supposed to be won't attach to the unit once it's installed. (Outer shell too long to screw in, the plastic bezel blocks it.) I guess I'll just try cutting the outer shell by an inch to make it fit. Thanks

In that case, yes I'd cut the outer housing off a bit. Just make sure you cut off the proper end. Meaning not the threaded end. No reason that won't work just find.

I cut it and it worked, for about 2 minutes before shorting again. I made doubly sure that the terminals weren't bumping or anything. I'm a little confused why this keeps happening.

Not sure what you mead " before shorting again" can you explain in a little more detail what is happening? What was the original problem that caused you to change the lighter socket?

The original issue was that any device charger wouldnt work in the socket. I checked the fuses, the chargers, the only thing left was the socket that wouldnt work. I meant that the new one I installed worked for a few seconds with the actual lighter it came with plugged in. After it heated up I popped it out then the fuse blew again.

I connect these and plug in. Then the fuse blows.
