Cj-5 axle fit a TJ

Hi all
is there a way to make a CJ-5 axle fit my TJ? I only ask because a co worker may have a dana 44 for sale which was for his CJ.

It probably wouldnt be the best swap since CJs are typically narrower.

Darn, that's what I figured. I was curious if the pumkin could be used and then add onto it or something. I'm new to this stuff but that's why I belong to this website, learn from everyones input.

yeah lots narrower and different bolt pattern to boot....why not get an 8.8? They are stronger and cheaper

The bolt pattern will also be different. TJ(5X4.5) CJ(5X5.5)

the 8.8, that is a ford correct? Does it have to be modified at all?
I saw one on craigslist as a Ford 1/2 ton pickup 8.8 axle'

You want one from an Explorer with disc brakes(93-98 I believe)

More than likely the dana 44 is from a older cj with 19 spline axles and is about a foot narrower and not really that strong. Best case it would be from a '86 CJ7 but they are also several inches shorter.

The 8.8 is where it's at. Correct bolt pattern, stronger than a dana 44, cheaper than a dana 44 and get the correct years from a explorer you get disc brakes. Some have 3.73's and 4.10's as well.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to get one under my cj.

Yes a ford. You will want to pick one up out of a newer explorer. They are 31 spline an have disc brakes opposed to te older models with 28 spline and drum brakes. The 8.8 will require welding...so if u don't possess that skill u will either need to find a buddy that does or take it to a shop. Check out the 8.8 sticky located at the top of the TJ section (I would link you, but it's harder to do from my phone.) it is not an uncommon swap, so u can find a lot of write ups and info on it.
