I have had this 97 TJ for 6mo now. 4cyl w/ automatic (30RH) 3sp. certain times it clunks. Like when you shut the motor off and the engine winds down to stop it makes several heavy taps, more of a clunking sound. It will do 3 to 6 of these quick clunks. Also does it when you are off the throttle and coasting over a bumpy road. Cant seem to hear it under acceleration. You can hear it going from forward to reverse while sitting still. I think I can feel it in the shifter. It is not (my opinion) any of the driveshafts, u-joints or suspension. Put it on my buddys lift and traced it to inside the bell housing using the pipe/hose to the ear method. My guess is the converter. It is a lock-up type and according to the PO trans repair bill dated 1/10, the converter was rebuilt. I did not know you could rebuild a converter. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I was thinking of getting another converter and sliding the trans back some and switching converters. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!
