I have a 97 Wrangler Sahara, 4.0L 5speed. It does NOT seem to be lifted and has 235/75r15 Goodyear Wranglers on it. I just recently bought this Jeep. I am trying to give as many details as possible.
Yesterday on my way home I accidentally knocked it out of 4th gear. From that point forward it start making a clunking noise when I slow down. It sounds like it is coming from the rear area. The clunking sound speeds up when the Jeep speeds up and goes by vehicle, not engine speed if that makes any sense. It almost gives the impression that the tires are trying to wobble off, but they arent wobbling. When you put the brakes on the clunking goes away and so does the vibration. A couple of times on the way home, the front end start shimming to the clunking, but also stopped when the brakes were applied.
I crawled under it when I got home, checked the back drive shaft for play in the u joints, and it has normal movement, just enough to feel. Then I crawled to the front. the front shaft will rotate over an inch and I can hear the clunking sound in the transfer case. The joints don't seem to have any play.
Did I knock something loose when it kicked out of gear? Did I break something? Is this something I can take a cover off and fix or am I in deep you know what???
All this when muzzle loading season starts in a week
Any help would be appreciated.
