Code sez "(small) vacume leak in emissions system"

Code reader pulled this up while at Autozone, after my check engine light came on. "(small) vacume leak in emissions system"... I'm sure there is a common place these leaks occur. This is on my 03 Wrangle with 4.0...

gas cap, gas cap, gas cap! This has happened countless times, if the rubber around the cap is cracked you probably need a new one. It usually takes some time for the cel to go away.

yep, x4. Could be you just didn't tighten the cap fully. See it all the time.

Have em clear the code, after you tighten the cap, and see if it comes back.

Hope they are right about the gas cap for you.

I have a similar code on my similar Jeep (2003 4.0). I have replaced my gas cap, but the problem remains. I have not been able to track down the cause.

Make sure first that your gas cap wasn't simply loose or that you had started your engine with the gas cap loose or off. Either of those can cause that same CEL and code you got.

Mine was throwing that code just recently too. I put on a new OEM cap and disconnected the battery to remove the code. I think you have to wait for 50 warm up cycles if you were going to get it inspected.

Same code here. replaced the cap, but turned out to be a crack in a vaccum line.

Was it difficult to find the crack? Did you do a smoke test to find it? Just curious incase my code comes back.

I actualy did a visual inspection of all the vacuum lines from connection to connection. Time consuming I know, But I found the crack at the very end of one vacuum lines connected to the intake.

If the code reappers start by checking the short lines that connect directly to the intake. The crack will most likely be at a bend or connection point.

The smoke tests are effective, but the kits to do it yourself are pricey. I have seen some people build their own for hard to find leaks. If you take your time and be meticulous you will can find most leaks without the smoke.

Smoke test? In the old days we would spray carb cleaner around vacume hoses at idle, when the idle increased we knew we found it. Don't know the smoke test.

Thanks! The problem did come back yesterday

I've been checking all around by the evap system and fuel tank in the back (2003+ tj evap canister and ldp are in the back by the tank). The leak is probably up front by the intake like you said.

Thanks again, going outside now to check it out

Used this trick myself in the past. Simple, but effective.

On vehicals with evap system there is a port that you can inject smoke into pressurizing the vacuum lines. the smoke of course will exit at the location of a leak. Many mechanic shops use this method. There are several videos on you tube that show the process.
