Considering 05 LJ

Hi all,

First post so be gentle...

Looking at this 05 LJ and wondering if anyone here had any thoughts. Going to look at it tomorrow so if you have any pointers on what to look over extra well let me know. He says he hasn't trailed it or trailored with it (though it has the hitch).

2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Check the standard stuff, make sure 4x4 works, hvac works, check for rust in floor pans, pull the carpet back, check the color of the trans fluid, should be red pinkish, if dark walk away. As for vin record check etc... Take it out on highway to speed and see if how it does.

I would go look at this one as well, I think its in the same area or close.

2005 jeep rubicon unlimited Dealer but they will come down, and its a rubi, don't know auto or manual though. If you plan to go off road this would be the a bit better choice.

same as above, check the obvious stuff. as far as the unlimited model, i picked
mine up a bit over a year ago and have loved it like no other jeep ive ever owned.
its a rubicon unlimited, so its a little better for the offroading, but basically the
automatic, the extra room, longer wheelbase has won me over! wish i could
have found this deal in my area last year

The caution I make is that some 2005 and 2006 4.0L engines are having an issue with the cam gear drive failing and it's not an easy fix. Personally, I'm glad I ended up with a 2004. If you're looking for an Unlimited, I I'd lean more towards a 2003 or 2004.

If you want an unlimited with a manual...you have to deal with or pray hard the 2005-2006 engine doesn't fail with the OPDA on the camshaft...

'04s were auto only!

Your right. Wow, we really are good! LOL!
I have an 05 auto and while I love the LJ, I really hate the under-geared 4spd. auto. It's a dog on inclines with 31" tires. It's manageable with the stock 3.73 gears but you would need 4.88s if you want to run 33"s. You'll be fine if you keep the stock size tires on it.
Check for paint/body work, it's hard to do on Wranglers in general because they always have orange peel effects and dirt lumps in the paint. A repainted panel in that color should stand out, ask the owner about any paint work.
The oil pump drive is a notorious problem with 05 and 06 model years. I'm at 63k miles and I don't have any signs of failure, yet.
$14k is not a bad price in my book, not sure where your from but that rig would sell for $16k in my area all day.

No matter what year LJ you look at (04-06) atleast they all have a Dana 44 rear axle, that a good thing.

That is a fair price around here. I paid $15,700 for a 05 LJ with 6-speed, soft top only, and 10k miles about 8 months ago. You will really enjoy the extra luggage room and higher towing capacity.

Thanks for all the feedback guys (and girls)!

I'm going to run a VIN check as soon as I get the VIN and see if there are any recalls, though it looks like the ODPA problem wasn't completely covered (vin range wise) under the bulletin, is that correct?

I've been looking through this thread related (OPDA/Camshaft Synchronizer shaft problem (TSB E05R) consolidated REGISTRY please sign - JeepForum.com) and it looks pretty scary, but nothing I can't handle. Thanks for the heads up. Anyone have tips on how to determine if it's a problem without ripping it apart and just looking?

This seems a bit below going price around here, which is why I jumped to go see it. I'll definitely be giving her a look over, thanks for the paint tip as well!

As far as gear ratios and tires go, I'm looking to put it on 31s most likely (light wheeling likely) and will be looking into what to regear to (sounds like the 4.2+'ish range).

Again, thanks for the feedback and tips so far, it's really helpful.

There is no recall for the engine problem 05/06 4.0L engines are experiencing.

Wow, I thought the Unlimited came out in 03. That's what I get for getting old.

I just bought my 05 unlimited rubi a love it. My buddy has one and said to go with a standard, he's right. If its a rubi it should have 4:10's dana 44's a switch for the lockers. Its my first jeep, i bought my son a 91 YJ and drove it for a coupe of weeks and had to get myself one plus the wife really loves it too, that means i can spend alittle more on it, lift, wheels!!!! Good luck if you get it you'll love it.

Just think of me, you'll never forget the first year for the LJ was 04.

But staying on topic, I would recommend the manual transmission if you don't mind shifting. If you're dead set on the auto be prepared to deal with the issues that surround it. You can fix the OPDA issue with a little drilling and tapping to insert a grease fitting.
