considering a TJ, help me decide if its worth it.

Hey guys, I'm thinking real hard about buying a Wrangler, and was wondering if you could help me decide if its worth the price.

Its a 2003 Freedom Edition, Liberty Blue (I think that's what they call the color)
Automatic, 4.0L, A/C (runs great), CD Player, everything stock. 225/75R15 on 15x7 chrome wheels
Full Steel doors, soft top with tinted windows
Everything super clean (no stains, cigarette burns, scratches, etc.)
Well, there is one scratch on the front driver's fender, but I don't care about that, it is a very well taken care of vehicle from the looks of it.
127000 miles and asking price of $10900.

My biggest concern is the mileage, since most jeeps on these forums seem to have under 100k. (wranglerforum, plus a couple of others)
Other negatives I have about the vehicle are small and probably not worth noting. One, the fog/driving light housings are rusted, and two, the rear tires need to be replaced soon.. Granted, I'll end up replacing the tires with 31's anyway, I just want to have at least a few months to build my bank account back up.. And a new set of lights can be had for pretty cheap

Oh yeah, I'm sure this is just because I'm not used to driving a Jeep (or maybe my current car just has bad power steering), but the steering seemed really sensitive. and the wheel had to stay turned slightly to the left. The jeep drove straight for the most part, no drifting or roaming, but I think the paranoia of it "being too good to be true" got the best of me.

So, what do you guys think? Too much? just right? I'm sure I can talk them down a little bit, and next time I go talk to them, I'm definitely taking it to a mechanic/tire shop to check on the steering and other mechanical stuff. It also wouldn't hurt to find a jeeper to see if the steering response is normal..

Oh, the only other jeep for sale in town is an 04 sport with 5-speed and 86000 miles, for $16000.. way too much for me

Way too much for either one.Take Talon's advice and keep searching.I would have a tuff time spending more than 6 for something that will be beat on a regular basis.

And don't let them tell you the freedom edition makes it any more special. I have a 05 Willy's edition which is cool and all but I doubt it would be worth much more then a normal X model which it's based off of. Jeep made so many "special editions" that are not that special IMO.

Just like when you buy a car with an "LT" after it, it means limited...what, did they make a couple million of those lol it's all marketing. Definitely get a wrangler but look around those are ridiculously high prices for what they are.

If properly maintained, >100K miles is not a big deal. The '97 TJ I bought new had over 184,000 miles on it and it was running like a top before it was stolen last month. It didn't burn any oil at all and it was seemingly in perfect running condition. The 4.0L engine used in our Wranglers is an old very well proven design that many consider to be "bullet proof". They seldom need any work like an overhaul until they have well over 200K miles on the clock.

Pricing depends on where you live. look it up on kbb.com and see.

Around here that price isn't too bad.

FWIW, I ran a 2003 Sport 4.0 and automatic on kbb using my Zip. it was worth RETAIL 11,870

Roughly the same results I got (I checked that first), which made me think it was decent. (and no, KBB does not include any editions, only the SE, X, rubicon, etc.)

one reason I did think it was a bit much, my cousin bought a used 2001 5-speed 4-banger, for only 7000.. that's about 4 grand for 2 extra cylinders and an auto..

I don't think KBB takes into consideration what some vehicles are primarily used for. they account for the cost of extra parts (big tires, DVD/nav, etc), but they don't consider the fact that most everything will be replaced or removed, and the rest beat up within a few years.

Another thing, I think the dealers jacked up the prices because of the time of year. Some people have said to wait till fall or winter... I'm going to hate waiting that long.. hmm, good birthday present to myself though (October)

Do you think jeeps can be had for cheaper because they're coming from a private seller? Ive noticed that KBB and NADA have huge price differenes between private dealer and retail..

Im going to try to talk them down, just because of the worn tires..but other than that, from what i can tell, ts a fair deal

Private seller will almost always be considerably less than a dealer. No overhead. That is whey there's such a discrepancy in pricing. You will always be better off buying from a private seller. JMO, but the price isn't too bad for my area, except for the mileage. I wouldn't worry about buying a Jeep with that many miles on it, but I wouldn't pay as much for it as I would one with fewer miles. I to my '01 a year ago with 38k for 11,200. Pristine condition, with an armful of extras thrown in and I don't feel like I got robbed. Wranglers hold their value well. I found mine on Craigslist. Check CL, autotrader, classifieds in a decent sized radius of your area.

The steering issue has to do with the short wheel base. Until you get used to driving a TJ, take it slow and easy.

way too much!

I got my 99 TJ sport (w/ dana 44 and 3.73s, 4.0 5 speed) for 7,500 it had only 79K when I bought it.

Craigslist it...hard. I looked patiently for months and it paid off. No regrets. TJs are totally worth it. I go off road with my buddy who has a blazer with a 350 and I pull him out more often than not. They are a blast and dead reliable. I wouldn't be afraid of high mileage. I would look for a 2003 and up if you want an auto because that is a four speed transmission and will last longer (previous years are 3 speed). If you can drive a stick go for it. The 4.0 is known to last for 300K miles with proper maintenance.

Good luck and happy hunting...

hey guys new to the forum but not to jeeps. you should hold out and try to find a cheaper one that has the 4.0 and a dana 44. some sport models have a dana 44 and i don't think the saharas came factory with 44s until 2000.
