considering at 97 Wrangler TJ

New to this forum and have a few questions about a Jeep I'm considering. I'm at a 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ Sport for a daily commuter of about 80 miles round trip a day. Looking for some advice on what to look for or stay away from. I have test drove it and it appears to be a strong running Jeep all gauges appear to be normal. Doesn't appear to be abused or taken off road much.

Here is what I know about the TJ.
6 cylinder
Miles: 100050
clean Carfax looks good, no identifying issues. 2 Previous owners.
Brand new softtop
New Brakes
Windshield wiper switch does not work in intermitted only low or high.
4 wheel drive works well in both high and low.
completely stock motor, trans, and suspension.

what is the reliability of this inline 6, transmission and do I have a concern for the suspension bushings?

what can I expect to get for MPG on Hwy and city?

Should of added that the asking price is $7000.00.
link to the web page.

thanks in advance for any advice I get.

Pro: Wranglers are ton of fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons: They get about 15-17mpg...so you will be at the gas station several times a week to support your commute (as it may have a 15 or 19 gallon fuel tank).

My 97 Sport with auto gets 15-16 MPG. And you will here anything around that. You will have a hard time getting over 18 with it. I bought my 97 for $5K last year. Most around here are in the $5-7K range. The 4.0 is a great engine. And all the transmissions are pretty reliable. Just check under it at the rear end. You can get the Dana 35 with the rubber fill plug or the better Dana 44 with the steel fill plug.

that is a bit better then what I'm getting now. I drive a 08 Chevy 2500hd Crew Cab Durmax diesel. I would also think that the TJ would be cheaper to fill then my Chevy. My intent is to park the Chevy except for when I'm towing my 5th wheel.

TJ I'm looking at has a 15 gal tank.

Looks like you'll get about 3 round trips to work for about $56 bucks.

I feel pretty confident that I'll save money on fuel. what I'm concerned about is the reliability on this motor and trans with 100000 miles.

It looks good in the pics. It doesn't appear to have been offroaded, but you really can't tell till you get under it. Durability is far above most things on the road (that's why we can beat the crap out of them offroad). If the fuel costs won't bother you, grab it as the price is more dependent on location than anything else. If you have looked around and it's in the ballpark and hasn't been beat up it's a touch high but not unreasonable for one in good shape. The bushings and things are easy Sat. fixes and can be bad on anything of that age.

P.S. That motor and tranny are bulletproof.

Check under it for any leaks and see if you can get them adressed before your purchase...it looks like it may have a drip in some of those pictures but it could just be water..otherwise I'd check the RMS a common and not that big of a problem leak area..however, if they fix it then you wont have to. Otherwise looks really clean, that would be closer to 10,000 in my area going by the pictures.

Yeah, I bought my TJ primarily for the same reason...to park my Dodge 3500 diesel and save it for towing my 5'er. The savings will come as long as 87 octane remains cheaper than diesel, plus you will keep the miles off your truck.

But...here is the big BUT. Wranglers are such an addiction that you are going to dump any saved money from fuel into Jeep goodies. But that is okay!

If the motor and tranny have been cared for you will prolly get another 150,000 miles out of the Tj the I6 is a well balanced motor so wear is minimal

that is the exact intent.....pay less in fuel and keep the miles off of my nice truck!! Not sure I like the idea of spending money on goodies...doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose?!?!?! LOL...maybe it wont be so bad...its always cool to make your "stuff" better with goodies!!!

Honestly if you not going into it with the intent to mod, or even offroad, why are you looking at a TJ? If I were you I'd be looking for something that got better gas mileage. Maybe put that extra money you'll save away and if you're still interested in getting a Jeep get one as a toy, not a commuter car.

I can tell you if my "commute" (to school) wasn't 16 miles round trip there is NO WAY IN HELL I would have a Jeep as a main vehicle. I would buy something else and keep the Jeep as an offroad toy/weekend cruiser.

EDIT: Never mind, I see you bought it...
