Considering getting a TJ

Hello,

I am looking to buy a Wrangler. I've owned (and still own) a few cars, but have always wanted a Wrangler and am thinking of getting one as a DD. I've done a little research, but am still not sure I really know what to look for or what questions to ask the owner. I'll definitely be taking any Wrangler to a Jeep dealer to be inspected before buying, but it would be good to know what to look for.

I am weary of other people's mods, but I found a car that's pretty close to what I want the end result to look like, so I figure it's worth checking out. It's a '98 and despite the mods, it seems a bit pricey for its age and KBB value (~$6800 in perfect condition). What do you think it's worth and what should I look for if I go to actually check it out?

Bumpers- $600 (ik his are custom but rough price if bought)
Tera t-case - $1300
Sye- 300
Driveshaft- 300
That's $4300 in mods right there... IMO I would buy it

As long as, of course, the PO hasn't beat the hell out of it offroading, which is more likely with a modded rig than a stock jeep

Looks pretty clean for around here. Price is a bit high but with all the rust buckets in the 5-6k range someone will probably buy it.

That's a good price for 88k. It looks in great shape and has some nice mods. Just have someone check it for any issues otherwise that's a good price

Thanks for the responses. I am still hesitant to get such a highly modded vehicle, especially since it's off the road for the winter so getting it inspected is going to be a problem. I'm going to call around that area tomorrow to see if any mechanics would be willing to go and check it out (hopefully with dealer plates). Is there anyone on this forum that would know what to look for that lives close enough to there to come check it out with me? As of now, I'm looking at going on Thursday or Friday morning.

That seems the going price for them around here. But the body does look pretty clean. Make sure you check the frame out as well when you go look at it.

If you do buy, make sure you have the owner get it inspected first. You don't want to deal with that headache OR get saddled with a vehicle that won't pass inspection.

The owner said it's off the road for the winter. This has been a hassle every time I've bought a car actually. This time, I can't really bring a mechanic with me since this Jeep is an hour an a half away. I intend to get it checked out before buying and want to find a dealer/mechanic with dealer plates in the area.

I've never owned a vehicle like this and don't have enough knowledge on my own to really know what to look for. If I can't find someone knowledgeable here or a mechanic that is willing to help me, I probably won't be willing to buy it. Hopefully, someone in that area has an hour or two...

If I was in the market for a new jeep I'd definitely consider that one. Looks like a well built jeep.

Looks like a clean jeep. But definitely be wary of modded jeeps and have a mechanic check it like you said you were planning on.
The only other thing I'd say it needs honestly is upgraded axle shafts. That dana 30 in the front really isn't ideal to run 35's, much less if that axle is locked with 35's. Other than that, good looking jeep with very nice mods.

OP: you should go for a more stock jeep imo, that way you pay less, mod it as you go and know full well what your needs and wants are as time goes by. People minds change on what they want to do to there jeeps. Atm i dont want to mod mine, maybe later i might. If you get that rig, sure everything is done but in the end isnt it more interesting to personalize it yourself? If its one thing i have learned about jeeps, its individuality is where its at.

I called a dealership earlier - got hung up on after asking the guy a few times to come up with a way to help me get it inspected before I buy it. Other places also refused to use their dealer plates to get it to their shop or to come check it out. I'll see how the owner intended to demo it to people when I talk to him in the morning.

PStov, I was wondering about the dana 30, though I read somewhere that good custom shafts with a dana 30 were ok for 35"s. What's a worthwhile upgrade?

And yes, I'm extremely wary of the mods, especially since I have a very superficial understanding of Jeeps. The thing is, this Jeep is more or less the finished product I was looking for and I know it would be years and a ton of money, if it even happens at all, for me to get an unmodded Jeep to this point.

RevCo - in the ideal situation, you're completely right. However, learning from my other car experiences, I'm very slow to do anything involving car mods and have very little free time to actually much of it myself, so at this point, I'd rather just get one that's already pretty much set up the way I like it and enjoy driving it instead.

Thanks for the responses - I'm pretty pumped about this (car/truck/Jeep?)! Even if the inspection nonsense doesn't work out and I can't get this exact one, I'll be on the lookout for a similar build so I can enjoy it while gas is still somewhat affordable.

You can get a super 30 kit I believe that upgrades your axle shafts to make them stronger. But I'm not sure that even that upgrade would be enough if you plan to wheel it, especially with those lockers. I know most people with a Dana 35 front end do a super 35 upgrade if they don't want to swap it for a different axle. That kit makes a Dana 35 like a 44 which is enough to run 35's. But I'm not 100% sure how much stronger a super 30 kit will make it as I have no personal experience with it.
Just search on google for like super 30 kit tj and you should pull up some likes to WF and jeep forum. Both good resources.

But the best thing you can do is educate yourself then make decisions for yourself. Jeeps are one of the most fun vehicles to own if you know what you're getting into. And once you start to learn a little here and there, everything else will start to make sense. It can be overwhelming but you're doing the right thing by learning more and you're definitely in the right place to do it!

Well, that was annoying. Drove 2 hours, really liked the Jeep - pretty much exactly how I pictured it. Told him I would buy it as long as everything checked out. As soon as it came to getting it inspected (as well as a highway test drive, both of which I mentioned were a requirement before I drove over), he told me I couldn't take it for a drive (it has no plates, so he was only willing to bring it to some nearby Midas, rather than the Jeep dealership I made an appointment at). Then, he started telling me I was getting scared to buy and that he had a bad feeling about the sale, at which point I actually started getting concerned that he was hiding something. After all that nonsense, he told me there was no way to make this happen. If any of you live in that area and can convince the owner to not be ridiculous, I have a feeling it's an awesome purchase for the $9k he's willing to take. But without a proper inspection/test drive, the trip ended up a waste.

So he didn't want you to test drive it, and didn't want it inspected.
Run, run far away now. There will be better Jeeps just keep looking!

The $80 inspection was well worth the piece of mind when i got mine. There were still some issues to work out, but at least I knew major things like motor etc were in great shape.

I had to drive 6 hours to get my jeep, the only thing i didn't do when i bought mine was take to a garage for inspection. My bad, gambled as he was selling it certified (a safety) and once i got home i ended up changing the brakes, rotors, re-seal the rear differential. 600$ later, it was road worthy. My situation could of been alot worse but like i said, gambled and came out ok i guess.

Sorry to hear about your situation but i would of walked away too in your situation as well.

Just keep looking. I looked for close to a year before I found one I was satisfied with. Don't settle, because you will just cause a serious headache for yourself (and your wallet) in the long run.

I wouldn't buy it without a test drive or inspection. When I bought mine I didn't have it inspected but I took it on a nice long test drive, on and off road. Everything worked fine and it sounded great so I bought it. 3 yrs later I'm glad I did.
