Converting LJ to a Pickup......

Just disposed of my JKU and bought a 2004 LJ Unlimited which I plan on lifting and making it into a Scrambler-like pickup truck. I have a few questions and would like to hear from those who have done a similar build.....

1. I will be adding an extended GR8Top to the LJ. I plan on cutting the roll bar right at the first crossover bar where the speaker pods are attached. I do not plan on extending the roll bar out the rear of the top to the back fender area. Will cutting the roll bar at the point mentioned seriously compromise the integrity of the body on the road?

2. I plan on rhino-lining the bed. However, it seems logical that the grill work on the inside of the tailgate should be covered with metal or aluminum in order to prevent the elements from getting inside. Also, should the outer grill work behind the tire carrier on the gate be covered as well?

Let me know what you've done and post some pics if you can. THANKS!

Will be checking this thread on it's progress.

Why did you get rid of the JK?

LJ build to pickup

I got rid of my 2008 JKU because it didn't have the right gearing and it was too big for the woods roads in our area. I might as well have had a full-size pickup. Plus the V6 engine lacked power, especially on the road.

I had a 2005 LJ which I traded in on the 2008, and boy I was sorry after about a year.

If you got a tailgate from a 97- 02 they don't have the vent in the gate those years had the vents in the hardtop.

Get a pre 02 tailgate and do the conversion on it to open like a pickup instead of swinging open.

As far as your question about the roll bar, I can't imagine you would have any issues as the "roll bar" does not tie into the frame at any point. It is only bolted to the body, which is bolted to the frame via the body mounts.
