couple of STUPID Questions

Hello all....I just said my hello's on the newb page...quick rundown....I have had several jeeps in the past but have always had Grand Wagoneers, I just picked up a Wrangler for the first time....a 2000 Sport 6cyl Auto (dont laugh, the wify needs to be able to drive it as well) it has 31's on it with plenty of room in the wheelwell so not sure if it has a lift or not...this leads me to my first stupid question...

1; how can I tell if it has a lift and if so how much?

now my second question may sound stupid, but remember that I have only owned Wag's before, these you would throw in neutral and flick the switch, hear the CLINK and you were set to go in 4x4...so...

2; how do I engage the 4x4 in the wrangler?

Thanks in advance, and please try not to laugh too much but seriously I am looking forward to breaking in the jeep, taking it off road and maybe finding some MUD to make the jeep HAPPY

1. Does it look about like mine? Mine has 31s and no lift. You can look at the springs and see if there is any kind of spacer but I would imagine that unless you have a whole lot of room above the tire that you don't have a lift or maybe a small one.

2. To put it in 4 hi just yank up on the little lever with the 4x4 markings while driving. You have to be going slower than 55 or 60 I think. To put it in 4 lo you have to be moving as well but I think they recommend under 5mph. Simple as that.

Thanks for the quick responce SouthTJ.....it pretty much looks like yours except it's blue....but anyways I checked it out last night and there are no spacers so I guess it's stock...it sure stands high......oh and thanks for the advise on the 4x4, it's very different that what I'm used to....I will try to play around with it this weekend. We have some huge areas that are isolated where there is some excavation going on....dirt here we come (kids cant wait....hell I cant wait )

I will take some pic's this weekend and post them.

You can also be stopped to place it in 4 low as well, infact that is the only way I have even put it in 4lo. Also there should be a guide on the driver sides sun blocker thing.. not sure if it tells how to engauge or just the conditions. Congrats on the jeep.

I just took it out during my lunch break onto a huge lot under construction (lots of dirt, holes, mounds, crevices etc.) anyways....(this whole switching into 4x4 while driving is new to me) I was doing about 10-15mph and lifted the lever (the jeep is an automatic) (also the lever has 2H, 4H, N then 4L) well it came up and the light on the dash came on as "part time" is this correct? it doesnt seem as though it's going into 4H....and if it does is there an "all time" light?
excuse me for sounding like a complete newb, but unfortunatley it is new to me.....and I havent got an "manual" yet.

Hey Erick, not familiar with that light. I have a 04 Rubicon, and it just says four wheel drive when engaged. All so when going into 4low, it is usually best to do that when stopped, or just barely moving......make sure you are off of the gas when doing it rolling, it releases the pressure on the drive line. When shifting out of 4low, barely start moving, get off the gas, and then shift all the way to 2hi in one swift motion, unless you want to go into 4hi. Just don't stop in the neutral position. Hopefully your Jeep came with a manuel, that is the best way to answer all these questions. Especially if you have part-time, and or, full-time lights. I had to order a Manuel for our Jeep, as I bought it second hand. Sure comes in handy for knowing how to operate everything.

I have that full time light on mine also. i searched the owners manual pretty thoroghly(spelling?) and couldn't find anything on it. Somewhere else I read that wranglers only have part-time 4wd. Something on how it actuates it. I think it is a good question since I never seen mine kick on just the part-time light.

Thanks guys.....yeah I am used to my old Wags that just had the "four wheel" light.
I definitley will need to go this weekend and pick up a manual. in the mean time if any one has or has heard of the same "part time" light please chime in.

Your jeep wrangler will only illuminate the "Part Time" light in any setting. The jeeps use a generic gauge cluster between several dif models that come with "Full Time" and "Part Time" 4 wheel drive. Part Time means just that, you are only supposed to have it engaged part time.

actully the part time means that 4wd will only come on when needed like when the rear tires are slipping, then the front axel will engage. in part time the only time all 4 wheels spin is if the rear ones slip and the transfer case gets the torque to send to the front. it is kinda like posi-track rear axels, in most new pickup trucks and SUVs if one tire slips the power will go to the other tire(note not limited slip there only one tire spins at a time where as posi-track both will spin but the more torque goes to the tire with the most traction). where as full time 4wd means if you pull that lever all 4 wheels will be spinning at all times (what your saying about full time is acutully all-wheel-drive like a subaru has, then all 4 wheel are spinning reguardless and there is no turning that off). I have done research on stuff like this because i have had to much spare time, but also i know the difference because in my 96 bronco it is full time ( when i pull the lever the hubs lockin and the transfer case engages and all 4 wheels have power at all times. but in my 97 TJ i can pull the lever for 4WH and it is call part time and there are times that i have noticed that only the rear wheels have power, also my 99 ford expedition has the part time, and that is engaged in (persay) wet weather but dosnt use all 4 wheels unless the rear wheels began to slip. sorry for the long explanation but it is the only what to get all the info across.

Okay there are so many things wrong with this i don't know where to start. Thus let me try to clear up a few things. This will be for YJ's TJ's and most CJ's.

Part time means the following: When a CJ YJ OR TJ is in part time 4wd either low or hi range it is for use only on slippery surfaces, snow, gravel, grass, a trail ride etc. Not for use on a dry road as it will bind up the system.

Full time Means: For use on any road surface, wet dry etc. the YJ and TJ's don't have this. ( Some CJ's had it as I recall)

When in part time, it is sending power to both the front and rear wheels. Now if one wheel get binded up, all the power heads over to the wheel will less traction. Trail example.. You are trying to climb a rock with your left tire, you can't get over it, and that tire stops turning.. but the right one is spinning faster but has no traction. Now if you had locker in there both tires would be turning and pull you up and over the rock, as both axle shafts would be "connected" to each other via the locker. Hence in a stock jeep the tire with the least resistance gets the power, due to the open carrier setup in the diff.

Now the XJs ZJ's WJ's and what ever the new grand cherokee is called do offer or have offered a mix of both part time and full time systems and all wheel drive as well. Which makes this a bit more confusing. But we can talk about those another day. Lastly the owners manual has good info on this, or should look there too.

Thanks Jared....I wasn't sure if I had a light out or not, or if the gears werent engaging or what. As long as I know it's norm, then it's all good. I just orderd an owners manual....so I'll be able to get some info from it.

Thanks guys for all the help, it is greatly appreciated.....oh and 4jeepn, thats the way I understood it as well..but liek I said I'm just a newb....I can already tell I'll be learning alot from you guys.
