crushed oil pan...

Yup, just what it says. Last time I was wheeling, I was a little enthusiastic, ripped off my liscense plate, scraped up my flair, and dented in my muffler pretty good (all minor I know), however I didn't notice this little gem of damage until yesterday when I was installing my rockerguards....

Is this a problem?

after that happened your oil level must be too high because it bent upwards. i would check this first.
with less oil and the right oil level the oil could become a bit hotter, but i don´t think that´s a problem.

warn makes a good oil pan skidplate...i installed last weekend BEFORE i drive on rocks.

Well, it ain't good! Since it hasn't blown up yet, it must not have gotten to close to the internals, but I'd be seriously looking into repairing or replacing it ASAP, especially if this is your DD?

I suppose you should consider yourself lucky, you could have real easily punched a hole in that pan w/out even knowing it and your Baby would have been stuck w/ a broken heart!

you can get a new oil pan for $100 off of 4wd.com

but you also need a gasket...and it says something about only working with ones that don't have the sensor in the oil pan

Hey, we're here to help, right?

You will need a new pan and gasket

general steps needed to replace.

1.drain out oil
2.remove oil pan bolts
3. drop pan
4.check to make sure you didn't bend the pan and hit and bent the oil pick up.
5.clean matting surface on pan and block.
6.put new gasket on pan I don't know what the 4.0 uses but it could be a 1 peace gasket, a pan that just uses rtv,4 piece gasket 2 piece gasket etc.
7. place jack under pan and raise into place
8.put all bolts in and make them hand tight
9.torque the bolts down in the proper pattern. They may be in inch pounds not foot pounds watch out for that.12 inch pounds=1 foot pound.
10.fill with oil.

ya replacing a pan is cake. I would deffinatly replace the pan. A dent that big could easily block the pickup, or even bend it. Since your engine hasnt blown up yet, and your oil pressure guage hasnt done anything funky (or you would have noticed it) I would worry about the motor, just replace the pan and get some armor.

Eh, that'll buff right out.

I assume you check your oil level regularly, have you noticed the level suddenly going up significantly?
From the looks of the pictures you've reduced oil capacity a little but but it doesn't look that bad.
If you're really worried about it, you can drop the pan and massage the majority of the dent out with a hammer.

There's a crease that I'm actually most worried about. New shiny metal showing through and all.... I don't think I could hammer it out, though I thought about it while I was kicking it and cursing yesterday.

heres a suggestion. Im not sure if you can weld or not nut if you take the out and hammer down the best you can. Then take it to a machine shop and have them weld a piece of 1/4" plate steel all around the bottom. I got a buddy who did it and he ahd a hole in his to begin with. So I think it would work great for you. Also save ya a bit on buying some armor. Just an idea.

If it's not leaking it's not gonna leak unless you bang it around some more. it should just be mild steal, easily reshaped.
If you really want a new one, look at wrecking yards, most Jeeps never go off road so you should be able to find one in good shape for considerably less than new.

Now that I think about it, my old Sahara had a gas tank that looked like that! I had this one spot I always used to dump it right on the tank on, I could never find a line thru that mudhole that didn't end up w/ me squatting it onto the same big, wide, flat rock. Even w/ the factory skid there, I just sorta influenced it upwards a few inches. Took a few gallons worth of capacity out of the tank!

Tiny, when you find a new oil pan, can you let me know where you got it from, I have a oil pan that has a similar look to yours but I also knocked the plug bolt a little bit and it is leaking about a drip of oil a day.

Trip - For god sake, take that damn thing off road. Take it up to somewhere in Wis. and find a mud hole.

It's a pretty rock shaped dent though.

Yeah, then you also have to get a sticker that says I dented the hell out of my oil pan and all I got was this lousy sticker.
