Smile Custom Tube Bumper

I currently own a 1999 Jeep Wrangler and have access to a machine shop. I'm looking to make some new bumpers for my baby. This is what I have drawn up.

The total length of the bumpers will be 56.74" after all is said and done.

Custom Grille Guard that is 24" in length width wise and 9.45" tall.

The whole assembly itself is 12.2" tall.

I will be using 1.5" Stainless Steel.

I am not here just to show I am also here for questions. Has anyone ever done this on the forums? I searched but I couldn't quite find anything I don't have any tube bumpers to measure so all of these are just guessed dimensions. I'm kind of going to try the "Trial and error" method. This tube bumper is going to cost me $100 after I'm done and it will be polished to chrome stainless steal!

If you have any suggestions or ways to help I'd much appreciate them.

Thanks for the time!

Just out of curiosity, why are you wanting to build a bumper so easily bought? It's a very common bumper, maybe not your exact dimensions, but close to them. When you factor in material and time consumed its almost just as cheap to buy a used set, which are usually pretty commonly found on Craigslist.

Are you using tubing or pipe? are you bending the tubing, or using weld fittings to make the bends? Are you going to grind and polish the welds to match the chrome look of the pipe? Just curious, because when you say chrome stainless steel, I assume you mean mirror finish and that is hard to find in pipe. and even sanitary tube isn't finished that finely.

It's going to be stainless steel tubing and I'm going to bend it the only welding to be done is my grille guard and the tubes to the mounts. I'm going to polish it myself to a mirror finish after I have it installed.

more pride in building it anybody can buy bumpers and parts but to build it yourself lets you have bragging rights. Besides if u fab things like i do its way stronger than you could ever buy. i built a bumper for my xj and when i hit a tree (blew a tire at 30mph) all i broke was my kc lights haha nice design! post up pics when you get it done!!!

I sure will post the pics as I go I plan on doing steps and rear bumper as well just the front bumpers are my focus now. I plan on putting on fog lights I was just going to read some threads instead of asking but do you have any good ideas for fog lights?? And sweet! Nothing like building it yourself and it proving you it was worth it! Nice!

i agree with you that there is more pride to be had in doing it yourself. I used to have an XJ also and was on Cherokeeforum where i got alot of ideas and how to knowledge. I just asked because it seems that Wranglerforum is more of a "bolt-on" community

when i built the bumper for the xj it was actually verry simular to your design but i had more of a "digger" hoop that was taller and stuck out from the jeep and i made it out of 1/4" wall square tubing and capped the ends and the bumper doubled as a air tank (wish i still had pics) i mounted the light inside the hoop with some 1/8" strap steel worked great the didnt bend when i hit the tree haha ill see if i can dig up some pics

If you could dig up some pictures that'd be great! I'm always lookin to improve my design. If you could show me atleast how you mounted your lights that right now is going to be my biggest puzzle.

MLB i dont have the pics anymore they were on my phone which is who knows where haha i used your drawing to show how my bumper was set up to accomidate lights (once i got a winch i moved the lights to the top of the hoop) the blue lines are the passages i cut into the tubes to allow the whole bumper to be used as a small air tank NOT FOR THE AVERAGE BACK YARD WELDER!! ive seen poor welds fail and the tank blow also if you go this route i would advise the "bumper tank" be empty when driving

If you go this route be sure to weld the bung first. The hole from the bung will allow the expanded air to escape, thus not pushing threw your still hot welds causing pin holes.

If paint's all you got man that's alright. Solid Works is a little bit like that :P I don't know if I like where they are though because I'd like to add a winch (not now but definitely in the future) and I don't feel like it'd fit to well in there with lights sitting there. I was thinking on the other side of the Grille Guard. I love the air tank idea though that's a sweet idea. I wouldn't have thought of that I'm definitely going to see what I can do!
