Intenally more useful to sling cargo...but they are secure...not "tight" and thus they allow cargo to "swing and sway" (aka bang and slam) and straps are usually more effective.
But D-rings can still look cool.
Carabiners and D-Rings (or shackles) are two different things. There are many times where a D-ring or shackle come in handy on the exterior of a jeep. In about probably 99% of recovery situations you will see at least one D-ring/shackle in use.
I am assuming that you are thinking about one of these (in which case your statement is correct)
