D35 Superior upgrade

I just found an unused superior D35 upgrade on craigslist for $300. It's a little out of my way to go get it right now but I'm going to be running to Chicago next week and back and I could probably pick it up on my way home. Is the upgrade/savings worth the extra 100 miles out of the way?

Is it everything or just shafts?

Not going to do you any good. It appears to be a set of 30 spline shafts, so unless you have a 30 spline locker/carrier laying around...they wont fit.

I mean shafts+locker for 300. That would be a steal and a half. lol

X2 on what Cons said. A decent deal I think for just the shafts, but you gota check the prices out, and consider if you want to lock etc.

I guess I overlooked that. Thanks guys. I don't plan on locking anytime soon. I'm content with the things I can do with 10 psi. Maybe when I grow up and buy a practical DD I'll lock it.

Ya, they arent a bad price. The link from superior lists them at 389.

Just be aware that you will need a new locker or new carrier to make them work

that actually cheaper than I thought. I know I glanced at some chromoly d30 shafts the other day that were more like 700... I said yikes. Might as well buy RCVs at that point.

I would guess they are so expensive because of the additional work/time it takes to make the "ears" on the shafts.

I would imagine that the rear shafts are much easier/cheaper to produce since its "essentially" just a flat plate and the shaft.

Makes sense I suppose, it's still a lot though. I can basically build a hp44 for the cost of those shafts. Nothing is ever cheap though.

Also be aware those are 4340 c-clip shafts, which means they still use the stock style bearings, which means the shafts tend to wear quickly from the bearing riding on them due to the type of material and heat treating process.

I dabble a bit in both locations. Indiana and California.

Just a heads up, it's looking like Superior is soon to not be here anymore, so you might want to pass. If you're going to spend that much money on shafts, you might as well get something that comes with a warranty should you break or bend a shaft.

I did the almost exact same thing last weekend with a Super 88 kit for $200. The person selling it didn't realize the shaft was bent, and I didn't realize it until I had it installed, so my Jeep is now on jack stands until I can find a replacement shaft.

But if you're fine with not having a warranty, it's not a bad deal.

If the shaft was only bent, couldn't it have been straightened well enough to be used with a good press?

To be honest, I haven't looked close enough to see where exactly it's bent; you can't tell just by looking at it, but the tire wobbles on it. I'm guessing it's near the flange, but like I said I'm not 100% sure. Blaine was surprised; supposedly I have the only bent Super 88 shaft they know of. If there is an easier route I'd love to take it; I need my Jeep by the 20th, and right now it's still on jack stands in the garage.

Regardless, I really don't want to play a guessing game trying to bend it back good enough; I'd rather just get a new shaft. Which should be easy to do provided the company isn't sinking.

Blaine has helped me a lot, and actually put me in touch with Mac after helping verify that the shaft was definitely bent and that it was in fact a true Superior Super 88. I'm waiting to hear back from Mac, so fingers are crossed at this point.

Oh wow, yep that type of bend doesn't seem like it'd be able to be fixed at all. That it was near or at the flange is surprising.

I know, especially with how the Superior shaft necks down from the flange. From the pictures I've seen Yukon doesn't do that, so that's kind of why I want the real deal.

Plus I don't like giving my money to copy cats if I don't have to.

I'm not a Yukon fan, check out the below photo of a broken 30 spline front Yukon axle shaft someone posted a while back.

Yep, exactly why I don't want to go with them.

Hopefully someone will fill Superior's shoes. It would be awesome if someone like Ten Factory or G2 would start producing the Superior shafts you can't get elsewhere.
