D44 axle shaft replacement on the trail...

I've searched the forum and haven't found my answer.

How do you get the race out of the axle housing without using a slide hammer? I wan't to just force it out with a long flathead screwdriver but I'm sure that's not good.

I'm not on the trail right now but I figured someone might have a clever way of removing it.

Mine pulled out just by using my fingers on opposite sides of the race. Not much help.

I've never had a problem sliding my D44 shafts out by hand, even after the splines were tweaked. That's not to say it couldn't happen though. If it were me and that happened, I'd start by using two big screwdrivers as levers on the sides of the axle flange to coax it out.

Found a pushmower bolt and transfer case lowering puck worked!

One small wack with the hammer broke it loose. Few more wacks around the edge got it out.

Oh crap, you asked about getting the race out, not the axle shafts.

On the trail, I would still just use a pair of screwdrivers on opposite sides of the axle flange to pop the race out. I don't think I've ever had trouble getting the race out though either.

If you are on the trail, and you break a shaft, and need to swap it out......why not leave the race in there and install the new axle shaft with bearings until you get home and can fix it right? I have done that twice with no issues.
