D44 out of a sahara

I found a guy parting out a 99 Sahara. The guy doesn't know whether it has the d44, but if it does, what are the chances of it being a 3:73 gearing (it's an auto).

Most likely it is a 3.73. Ask if it has a metal plug or not. If it had a 4 cylinder it is 4.10.

If it's a Dana 44 like shown below, its ratio will be 3.73. As Doclouie said, a steel bolt in the lubricant fill hole on the differential cover is a dead giveaway that it's a Dana 44. A plastic snap-in lubricant fill hole plug indicates it's the Dana 35 as shown in the second photo.

If it's a Dana 35, it's not worth $300. If it's a Dana 44, JUMP ON IT!!!!

Can one place a rear differential in the front?? Meaning i have a d44 in the back and found another and would like a matching set(i think rubicons had that option of identical differentials)

U would need a front d44 out is a rubicon for it to bolt in.since the pumpkin is offset

Cheaper semi easier to find option that's a direct bolt in is the HP30 out of XJs around 99. Its stronger then the lp30 we got, and its up to 35s in most cases.

No need to worry, like he said...I'm one of those that just a few months ago was asking axle questions.

Not to mention you can't steer an axle made for the rear.

Only reason I posted on the thread as everything was answered.
I wrote a 20 page paper for a philosophy class on the falling of the whale as it realizes its consciousness and relativity to the world.

Someone asked this question further up the post, didn't see a reply. If this would have been a d44, would it be a direct replacement for the d35? no change to driveshaft? Just wondering myself for a future find.

D44 out of a tj into a tj bolts right up. If its out of a Rubicon then you'd have the issue of the locker but that's it.

TJ Dana 44 axles are plug & play for TJ Dana 35 axles, they bolt right in without needing any changes to the mounting points. The D44 does have a larger diameter ring gear so it positions the yoke on the pinion shaft roughly 1" closer to the transfer case. In some cases, that requires that that driveshaft be shortened that 1" which is a minor $60 or so job for a driveshaft repair shop. A tall enough suspension lift however can often negate the need for a shorter driveshaft. That said, once a tall enough suspension lift has been installed into a SWB TJ, like 4" and taller, that is also usually the time to replace the OE driveshaft with an aftermarket CV driveshaft and SYE kit for the transfer case.

Well there you go, see....Im still learning. It was plug and play for me so I thought it would be for every one. I already had a lift and SYE when I did the swap.
