Dam Lifter Noise

Yes, any engine with 130K on it is subject to make some noise, but mine has developed what appears to be some chatting lifters. I am NOT interested in making it go away with a re-build or anything like that, but I would like to muffle it.

The problem seems to be more noticeable when it is warm out for some reason. I expect the oil is thinner and draining down from the top.

Anyway, I have used Greased Lightening additive which is a small bottle of PTFE. Worked great as far as the lifters are concerned, BUT not a fan of PTFE. Currently running w/o any additive.

From reserach I have done in the past, PTFE can cause troubles with clogged oil filters, so I really don't want to use the stuff.

Was wondering if anyone had any good experience with an oil additive that ACTUALLY woked w/o any bad side effects. Oil additive are mostly bunk, in my opinion, and they are all different. But thought I would put this out there.

BTW, I am running 10w 30 Valvoline High Mileage oil right now. I have also run TWO cycles of cleaner recently. My oil is very clean and I don't suspect that deposits are causing this issue at all.

Try some rislone oil additive. Made to quiet noisy lifters. Sold at walmart and other fine automotive stores.

Unfortunately, i think you have to substitute a quart for a quart and I just changed the oil. I will check on the bottle.

Well I was going to say just drain a quart out if you are full, but I would just dump it in and run it, as I have done it before with no I'll results. Worked wonders on my small block Chevys with lifter noise on startup in the past. Quart of rislone and no more noise. I think I did see where they now sell a concentrated form which is only a pint or half of a quart. Seen it in walmart a year or two ago. Great stuff. STP is also good but I havnt used any in a coons age. Try not to ever use additives but sometimes they come in handy!

You will quiet noisy lifters by adding 1 quart of detergent motor oil with your next change. After about 500 miles just change the filter. I'm not a big fan of additives since I have a good working knowledge of petro chemistry. ZDDP has me sitting on the fence for an oil additive for older engines (prior to '86) but that's better left for an arguement later.

pull the oil filter you may have to pull it and reinstall start acouple times but it should works to ''drain" a quart that would be an easy way :^)

I thought we are ALL using detergent motor oil unless we specifically hunt down a quart that says NON DETERGENT. And it is hard to find!

You are correct, I meant to say "High" detergent. If you are using a synthetic they are low (really low detergent unless the manufacture says that they blended an additive that cleans and removes _____. Same thing can be said of single weight oils as well.
The highest detergent motor oils are Castrol GTX (at 17% more than off the shelf oils) and any of the oils rated for Diesel engine service (35% greater dispersments). Lets say you just changed oil and your're using Mobil 1 - drive around a couple of hundred miles and check your oil. You will most likely see a translucent carmel color oil. Ad a quart of Shell Oil Rotella and ride around for 30 minutes and check the oil - it will be nearly black! So just change your filter and don't worry about the 1 qt. of something different - they blend right in and wont harm seals or gaskets.
I never seen anyone using Castrol GTX on a regular basis have lifter noise.
