Dana 30/35 & 4.10 Gear...Shimming?

All, I am overtaking the challenge of installing 4.10 gears on my 06 Jeep Wrangler. I have a Detroit Tru Trac in the rear and I am installing a Power Trax no-slip in the front. Does anyone have any experience on shimming combination for this set-up? I am also installing a SYE and a Warn Manual Hub conversion kit. Any insight/lessons learned would be appreciated. Oh, I have a 4 inch lift, 1 inch body, and 33 inch tires.

do you have an auto tranny?
then i would think about going with 4.56 gears because you can drive slower down a hill with that.

i´m going to install some 4.56 gears on my 06 TJ and a rear electrac (truetrac with 100% feature) in thenext weeks.

which gears do you actually have?
if you have 3.07 you´ll need a new truetrac because for +3.54 gears you need a new carrier in the D35.

if you already have the 3.73 i would go to 4.56 because you will only notice a very snall difference if you go to 4.10.

the no-slip in the front is ok. but in the winter driving with 4H with higher speeds is dangerous with that in my opinion.

i think when he says "shimming" he is talking about the process that you go through to set up the gears....

Question Shims

I decided on 4.10 because I read it is the best combo for the tire set up I have. My Jeep is a daily driver and I don't want to sacrifice too much gas mileage. In regards to shimming, I was asking if anyone has done this before and has the shim combo for this set up. I do have an auto tranny and 3.73 gears. Thanks!

the shimming to set the backlash does not have a set formula. so, what worked in mine will not neccessarily work in yours. we're talking accuracy to thousands of an inch, and casting differences in the R&P set, axle housing, and the truetrack make i tdifferent from vehicle to vehicle. if you've never set up gears before, at the least you need to have someone helping you who HAS set them up before, or you're likely gonna have problems. im not saying the average wrench-er cant do them, but they are most definetly tricky and intricate to set up properly.

you will need a micrometer and a press at the minimum to swap carriers.

well now that you got on this subject, i will say that i would go with 4.56. rubicons run 4.10's with 31's. plus 3.73 to 4.10 is not a big jump.

I run 4.10s,5 speed,6cyl and 33s it is a great combo.Avg 17-19 mpg.

Gear Setup

hey
look on the pinion for the pinion head depth settings and the ring for the back lash setting ( for how much play in the pinion). i was like you on gears. i read a few how to articles and then i just tried it. I think anyone could setup gears if they just learn and then try it.

I have a 99 Tj with auto and 4.0. It also had 3.07 gears which I was running 33" tires with. Changed out the carrier in the rear when I went to 4.10 gears. Never did gear swaps before. I have afriend with a press and bearing remover (Absolute must). Make sure you set the tolerances as they are suppose to or you will burn up some gears and bearings. Like I say I did it but it took a lot of put it in, take it out, reshim and put it back in. I like the ratio but wish I never would have stayed with the Dana 35. I snapped one axle and twisted trhe other. I have since installed a Ford 8.8 with 4.10's and thrown out the Dana 35. Much tougher differential with bigger tubes and Axles. I don't do any rock climbing with it but run the heck out of the mud. I broke the Dana 35 when I hooked up and tried to outpull my sons full size Chevy so I can't completly blame that on the Dana.

I recently put 4.56 gears on mine - but I have a D44 rear. I don't know the difference between that and a D35. I initially bought a cheaper bearing and shim kit and ended up having to go get a Yukon kit for each axle. It contains enough shims to do the job. On my D44 rear, it was easy because the shims go on the outside of the carrier bearings. The D30 was a bit harder and I ended up making some set up bearings from the cheap kit I previously bought so I could get it right. Be careful on the crush sleeve on the D30 - it slips up on you fast when torqueing it down.

I still have not taken the challenge, but I have all my parts and will wait for my friend Shane at the Auto Hobby Shop here at Kadena Air Base to work on it. Shane has a lot of experience on this and has the micrometers required to check for backlash. Thanks again and I will post the final results and any lessons learned next week.

This my friend is the best way to learn gears. To have someone help you that knows the tricks to get a good setup and pattern. Good luck with your project.

Isn't my post but doing the same thing for a first time. Kind of second guessing just staying with a Dana 35 now. Mine gets a little muddy for play, nothing major. Is it that bad for moderate use? Asking because all my stuff is in boxes still, starting to put it in today!
